I think he is trying to make a statement that 138000 gallons of diesel fuel leaked out of a pipeline and is now soaked up into the ground. That is a very large bio hazard

138,000 gallons of diesel fuel was leaked out and 25,000 was recovered so only 113,000 gallons was still out there! Read the article and click on "pipe spills since 2010" at the bottom portion of the story. It shows all the spills across the nation since 2010 and if you hover over each spill, it will tell you how costly was the damage and who owns the spill. There are 533 inspectors for the entire country and each inspector has 5,000 miles of pipeline to inspect!

I love it.
So .... let's tear up the keystone pipe, and use AMURICAN steel. And the same for Dakota, but put it back next to Bismark, instead of thru sioux property.
Come'on people, Trump wants to give our gov't back to the people. So let's use only AMURICAN steel, and Cram it down the throats of as many as we can.

We have real problems, and we need real solutions, and I just think that our President, and the Republicans are more interested in POWER, than US. ......ALL OF US.

If Magellan is now reporting 138,000 gals of product released, it was probably more like 250,000 to 300,000 gals. Initial reports are always underestimated. It will take a while for the numbers to be factualized from pumping records. The number of 25,000 gals implies that that was diesel fuel recovered. Actually it was a combination of diesel and water. Unless they were able to suck from a pure pool of product, the number of gals of diesel was probably closer to 12,000 gals. A lot of the diesel will evaporate and become air born in the sucking process and thereby escape to the atmosphere. Companies on contract will pickup all available "free" product, and then start on the product contained in the soil. Many tons of contaminated soil will be dug up and transported to either a burn site or a registered dump site. Test samples of the bottom of the dig sites will continue until the violator organic readings are within state EPA standards. The soil will then be replaced and test wells will be sunk. Water sampling will continue for a long time which could be years. A second approach could be that the dig sites will be left open to allow wind to carry away low levels of voc's (violator organic compounds) to evaporate. In the process water may collect and allow the diesel to form on the water. When this happens, the voc's can be sucked off or padded of manually. By this time one hell of a lot of money has been spent and the area of the spill can not be used for many purposes. It would not be unusual for the responsible party, Magellan, to have already bought the property if the owner is agreeable or do a long term lease until remediation is complete.
Could the leak be a result of bad steal, yes. However it could also be the result of a piece of heavy equipment driving over the buried pipe. No matter how it occurred, the clean up will be done to EPA standards and very expensive.

I suspect that should read "volatile organic compounds"

"Now the Rest of the Story" - this 138,000 gallon leak was NOT discovered by an inspector. A person that lived nearby discovered the leak. In this age of electronics - there is no excuse for a leak going undetected. This is not negligence on the part of the oil industry - this is gross "criminal" negligence.

The coal industry is currently bragging about how clean burning coal has become. These are the same guys that fought against regulations mandating the clean air standards that are "currently" in place. But of course President Trump will fix that: Very soon the coal industry will get back to bragging about how cheap coal produced energy is: And stop all this silliness concerning clean air standards.

You are totally correct, I used the wrong word. Thanks. Leon
