I like #1 with the tight crop. The color brings my eye right to the subject. Well done! For #3 and #4 the last one could be either. The bottom line though is what you like. They are all very good. Thanks for sharing.

Funny that you should ask. I saw a reply here a short time ago that talked about the same thing. He was saying, a gentleman from England, that it was easy to tell which shots were done by Americans of birds, all cropped very tight. I don't recall if he was talking about pictures that were entered into contests or not.
For the Robin, because it is only one bird, showing more of the bush gives a great sense of presence for the image. With the 3 birds, the attention is really on them and the closer crop is preferred.

All the images are nice, but I like the cropped versions. Shows more detail of the birds and branches they are standing on.. Just think that you don't need all that background.

Great set...they are equally nice...just depends on one's preference!!
I absolutely hate the first two photos. It has nothing to do with your photography skills. There are many juniper trees on my property & the robins flock there by the thousands to gorge themselves on the berries. And then...guess what. You got it...they poop on anything that doesn't move (roof, deck, deck rail, cars, garbage cans, gas grill on deck, camper...)! I was going to post a photo of all the guana around my house, but realized it might make someone throw up. Sorry, your nice photo just set me off as I know that bird is now going to poop on something.

I think I like the closer ones better of the pairs.
I prefer the close crop and my wife does not. So your friend was correct with her comment. Thanks for the response.
Thanks to everyone who responded. Got a lot of great suggestions that I will utilize in the future.

I'd seriously consider a vertical crop because of the tree.
I agree with Longshadow. However, back to the original question I like the tighter crop.
OK, Odd Man Out here,
I take lots of flower (more or less macro) and sailboat (nothing like macro) pictures.
Very early with both and in your case here, your have to decide if it is a picture of a bird or a scene that you want. Then you can work with the file and see what you can do. Sometimes I want a flower center frame and sometimes not. Sometimes I tighten the F-stop so more is in focus and sometimes not. I have even turned down the ASA (try that with a 35) so the focus of the background softens.
All four are good, but all four are also different. This is where artistic value comes into play.
