I like Fujifilm cameras, but this site will help you narrow down somewhat based on IQ

I'd say use a camera with lenses you can put a polarizer on or shoot early or late in the day. Very bright and sunny over there.

weight should never be the initial issue. you bring the best equipment and lens (es) needed to get the job done.

I am not saying what you should buy but when it comes to mirrorless cameras I went with Olympus. Olympus went into a joint venture with Panasonic years ago and the lenses manufactured by one fit the bodies of the other.

The Joint 4:3 venture of Olympus-Panasonic started in 2003. Then Oly-pana rolled out mirrorless PEN and GH in 2006. They were the first in Mirrorless (all camera mfrs) and now have a decade of "mirrorless" and lens selection. Longest history in interchangeable mirrorless.

Lenses.... HUGE SUPPLY, 4/3 mirrorless has the longest list of interchangeable lenses of all the other mfrs, from entry level to pro level.

I have Sony A6000 and two Sony NEX 6 cameras.... If you want to save money, buy a used Sony NEX 6 and used a kit 18-50mm lens with image stabilization since these two cameras do not have IS built into the camera...Buy a 3rd party charger and about 4 extra 3rd party batteries..Amazon and Ebay have great prices on these...

here is the lens on amazon....you can find it at discount used even on the amazon site... This is a perfect lens for what you will do in general in Hawaii....
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SEL50F18-Mount-Cameras-Black/dp/B00EPWC30O

This is a very light extremely functional camera. The reason to buy an NEX 6 is that the discount is very deep on them and for the life of me I can't for practical reasons see any difference between my much more expensive A6000 and the NEX6..same body style..basically same menu and features..But if you want to buy the more expensive A6000 you might hunt around on KEH.com for a primo used one and save a few hundred dollars and still get a nice warranty from them.

I have touted the Sony A6000 constantly on here as one of the best cameras made in the last 50 years. I use it all the time and my pro style HEAVY Nikons now remain dormant as well as my prosumer level Canons...

Sony has come out with VERY pricey iterations of the A6000 now but I think they are an absurd waste of money....

The NEX6 is really the basis of this development with the A6000 being the the next and ultimate step ..the perfect upgrade from the NEX6 (NEX7 falls where??..).

But if you want the most usable, convenient camera you have owned in decades, the NEX 6 and A6000 are the way to go....

Sony got is so right with these two cameras !!!!!

Get to know all the features and how to access them within the menu....but both have nice DSLR dials to access the most used features easily...

Good luck .....I would certainly go to a camera shop and get your hands on an A6000 or if not the A6300 depending on what they might have in stock... But you do not have to spend so much money and if you go the NEX 6 route you will save a bundle with no practical downsides whatsoever....

That lens with the optical stabilization is terrific...get a CP for it to punch up the colors and clouds and ocean scenes over in Hawaii...wear a nice brim hat !!!

Have fun!!!

I like my Canon Powershot SX 610 HS. With a small tripod, this camera has 18X zoom and is WiFi enabled. 20.2 MP w/ 3" LCD on back. It easily fits in a shirt pocket. About $225.

I would highly recommend the recently announced Fuji X-T20 for $899. The colors and B&W multiple film setting in this camera are really special. The camera with an exceptional kit lens is
$1199. This Fuji X-T20 is not ready for purchase, however, if you travels are in the summer this camera would have been offered for sale for at least three to four months before you leave. The nice thing about Fuji is that they release firmware upgrades fairly often which both correct camera issues and more often offer more features for the Fuji products. This Fuji model is packed with features for such a small camera and offers upgraded video.

Many of those lenses are in second generation form, now. Some of the older ones can be brought mostly up to date with firmware upgrades.

There are generally two types of lenses made for Micro 4/3... inexpensive "travel" lenses (light weight, and small, with modest apertures) and very expensive pro lenses (FAST, heavier, bulkier, and sometimes with image stabilization and weather sealing). Leica designed a few primes (12, 15, 25, 42.5) and a zoom (100-400) that are to die for. Panasonic and Olympus each have a few real gems, too. Double the focal length to compare with full frame field of view...

I am a professional photographer specializing in architectural photography and performers on stage. I use Canon full frame cameras for that work. I have a compliment of lenses from 14mm- 400mm. For FUN photos I bought a Sony A6000 with a 16-50 and a 55-200mm. It's light and I am very pleased with the results.

Which is most important, the trip or the photography?
Are you going alone?
If you will be alone and mostly concerned with the photography, then all that has been said about the Sony Alpha 6000 is valid.
If you will be in company, and don't wish to hamper their pleasure with your fiddling about changing lenses etc. get a
Sony DSC-RX100 III plus spare battery and charger. $650 should do it.

My last trip I took the SONY A77 and 4 lenses.
not this next trip. I purchased a SONY RX10 III
for our trip. Great family photos for memories
1" sensor back-lit CMOS sensor.
Great 24-600mm lens
weather sealed
The size of a DSLR but don't have to change lenses
I just don't like the smaller size of the mirrorless camera's
an open box camera is $1300.00 so might be over your budget
Not a pro camera, but great photographs.

I normally use a D810, but for my trip to Italy I wanted something small and lightweight. I purchased the Fuji XT-10 and was thrilled with the results. I also got the 18-55 2.8-4 and 10-24 lenses. B & H has some nice bundle deals that includes a free Pro SAN Disk 32 SD card, spare battery, etc. Have great time!

Try lugging around the D810 with the 70-200 f/2.8 and being 68 with arthritic hands. No fun. Takes all the enjoyment out of photography. Nothing wrong with the d810 except too large and big. Go mirrorless
