Hi Namwife. That is a nice photograph.
Do you not use any editing by choice or because you don't have the software? I think most photos can benefit from some tweaking. I know mine sure can.

I took the liberty of making some minor adjustments to your shot. I hope you dont mind. I'm no expert at editing. Really trying to learn myself.

On my screen the photo seemed to lack a little contrast making it blend with the background. My tweaks were meant to bring them up front. Some folks like a softer flatter look in portraits but I personally prefer a little more contrast.

The goal is always to get the best photo you can out of the camera. However, remember that even Ansel Adams spent a lot of time tweaking in the darkroom!

I like this photo- great expressions and pose for the young couple.
This looks like late afternoon sun light or open shade. Did you use a flash fill?
I think the second take here is closer in skintone- the first looks a bit too warm, although warm is good too. Open shade can be very blue, so set your digital camera accordingly or use a warming filter on your lens if shooting film, and don't forget to meter through the lens or open up a 1/2 stop of so.
google Dean Collins key shifting for some tried and true outdoor shooting techniques with no flash. (Or with!)
Best shooting,
Nelson Auge

To me, the original , not touched up is far better than the re-touched which is quite harsh in color/contrast.... The orginal was,I should say is, a beautiful warm portrait of a happy couple...

I like the original better, but agree all pictures could benefit from a little tweeking. Nice composition.

Sorry this might come off short and not well thought out, I'm on my phone so it's not ment to be.

If you are working on getting the best shot straight out of camera and not do any PP work do NOT shot in RAW. RAW is a digital negative, needs to have some contrast added and will need to be at least sharpened. Switch ti shooting JPEG until you are ready to start using PP. You will be happier with your out come.

I really love the D40 but I need another camera body so I don't have to keep changing lenses at events...I'm really considering the Nikon D5100...Does annybody have one?

I've only had the D40 2yrs this Christmas up until about 4mos. ago the only setting I shot in was Auto, and landscape...just started playing w/ other settings tried some manual as well  not too good at that yet LOL I just hope to someday convey and evoke emotions through my shots.
