Thanks,William.I can identify with your thoughts on prime lenses.when I started out with a film camera,Nikon F and a 50mm lens, never thought that I was missing something in the way of equipment.of course I made it work,it's all I had.good excercise on learning your trade and skill.with medium format camera I mostly used the 80mm lens, never had a problem. Also had the pleasure of just a point and shoot, did not matter, got some incredible work with that because I saw the shot and got it.sometimes too much gets in your way, when all you want is the image that you see before you.well written and thanks for your time

You are right about the country not wanting to face reality. That's a given. Being realistic does not mean being unpleasant. The country's problems have nothing to do with putting people down. That's just a distraction. Also, there's nothing people can do but try to treat others like they would want to be treated. That would cure just about every problem the country has. But that's just a pipe dream.

Unpleasant according to whose definition? Losing a ballgame is unpleasant but you still have to say you lost the game.

Been feeling this way long before google.

Originality has become banality as the same 'ideas' are repeated over and over and each person thinks this as their 'original'.

What is left? What folks do not see but even that field is getting crowed.

Sign of the times, like everything else. Our attention span is shorter and so is our will to investigate.

So what is really left? Our direct environment that often we do not even know. A rainfall can change something that you can 'document'... I am sure we could find more stuff if we really think about it but 'originality?' well, I am not sure. This is why I am concentrating on learning more than in taking pictures just for the hell of it. It stills happens (last thread created) but more often than not... Not.

Note that despite this 'inconvenience' of sharing the planet and the same vision there are many others things that make us happy, like tweaking some tails...

You might want to use 'quote reply so we know who you are 'talking to'... Just an idea.

Wow! This topic hit a nerve. How I got around not being famous and perfect and all that junk is by making photo albums that sit on a table in our living room. Our guests can either open an album or not. A discussion might or might not take place as a result. My ego remains in my pocket.

So many people have spent so many years raising the performance bar that statistically speaking the average slob has no chance of ever doing something of note in every field but 1, photography.
It is the one area where, because of its uniqueness, joe slob can attain something of value independant of what has been done before.
So get out there and shoot.

Sounds like part of that wall may be the redundancy and familiarity with your equipment may play a part. What about broadening your horizons like... Underwater photography or using a drone with photo capability? What about the challenges of film and developing and printing your own pictures?
I am 68 and got my first "technical" camera when I was in my early 20s but soon decided to branch out into underwater photography. It was just last year that my wife bought me a drone ($1500 now available for about $300). A Gopro may never compete with a top notch Canon or Nikon but you can use it for both of the above activities and get some pretty interesting photos in the process.

Just don't buy your camera at Walmart.

Hi,been shooting and enjoying photography over 45 years.I am finding excuses for not bringing my beloved camera with me lately.just got back from FDRs library and home, upstate N.Y.Figured it has been photographed extensivly, you can google it and there it is.what am I going to do,that has not been done.thinking about that wherever I go.I like to keep it fresh, but after looking at so many beautiful pictures since Google,it all looks stale.nothing impresses me anymore.is it just me,or maybe a dull time of year in the northeast.I want new, different, something that has not been done to the point that it is boring.have any of you felt this way? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I look at it this way. My shots may not be the best ever taken of a subject but they are mine and they are unique. You may be shooting the same thing but your angle and the lighting is it's when you shoot it. That makes it unique and like no other. I can't think of a better reason than that to photograph anything I like regardless of how many times it has been done and by whom. it's not a competition or contest, it's doing your own work, as you see it. No one else has your eyes or your thoughts when you look at anything.

Maybe you just need a new perspective and new challenges. Engage your mind as well as your eye. Check out the galleries on this site. http://seeingfresh.com/about
And yes, I'm sure some of the 'blahs' you are feeling is the time of year here in the NE. There is a name for it but I can't find the enthusiasm to look it up.
