Why not purchase a Lacie Rugged External Hard Drive with Thunderbolt/USB connection. Thunderbolt allows for fast transfer speeds. I you visit the Apple Genius Bar you might see a Genius (Apple tech) use the Lacie Rugged Drive. Most Lacie Rugged Drives can be formatted in Apple format or Windows

I use two of the WD my passport 2TB with the thunderbird connections. Much faster than usb
