I use Lightroom, the stand-alone V6.
Definitely Lightroom. I am trying On1 Raw but have not spent enough time to make any judgements.
Same as jerryc. Lightroom V6 stand alone.
Not to start a war or anything but, what do you mean by an "edit program?"
Adobe Lightroom is THE program for cataloging photos. You can do some (most) editing in Lightroom. If you are wanting to do extensive editing or use layers, Adobe PhotoShop might be what you want.
I tend to use both. Lightroom works for about 80 percent of my workload. The other 20 percent is handled in PhotoShop. While in Lightroom you can edit a photo in PhotoShop then return to Lightroom. The two programs are designed to work together virtually seamlessly.
Thanks to each of you for your input, I'll let you know what I end up with

Believe it or not there are other, and less expensive, programs than Adobe products (Lightroom, Photoshop). Before spending your money, do yourself a favor and look into Macphun---it won't cost you anything to look and you might be surprised at how good their their programs are.
The Macphun Creative Kit includes the programs Focus, FX Photo Studio, Intensify, Noiseless, Tonality, and Snapheal. They can be bought together in the kit or individually. Macphun also offers Aurora HDR and Luminar. Luminar is the program I use the most.
Another good program for Macs is Affinity Photo.
The Macphun programs and Affinity Photo can be used as extensions in Photos for OS or as stand alone.
I am not saying that Adobe product are not good, they are great, but they are also expensive. Adobe Creative Cloud runs $10 a month, that's $120 a year, year after year. With Macphun and Affinity Photo you pay once and updates are free.
Macphun and Affinity are easy to learn and to use. If you use the "Search" function to look up Lightroom or Photoshop you will find an amazing number of post outlining problems with those programs. If you do the same with Macphun and Affinity you will very few.
Also, Macphun and Affinity Photo offer a large number of outstanding tutorials that are free on their web sites.
Thanks, I'll probably follow your advice
Rick
Also look at DxO. Not as complicated as photoshop.

I prefer The Adobe Photoshop CC, but do 95% of my editing in Lightroom. Photoshop is there to do the heavy lifting.
Found "RawPower" at the App store....very good!
I second looking at Macphun's suite of applications. Lightroom is a standalone product that is not subscription based (YAY!) but I personally despise the interface. Photoshop is (a fantastic fantastic product that i adore) a subscription-based model (now) which Adobe has done to milk it's customers pockets. Everyone has the right to make a living , but as someone who is an enthusiast, not a pro, dropping that cash is a significant investment, one that many can't afford to make. And depending upon how deeply you need to be working, if you are a Mac user, Apple Photos has a lot of the code from Aperture under it's hood.
I also use MacPhun products and have been pleased. I use Capture One as the main raw processor and editing program.
