Two inexpensive fast lenses with great optics that can do very good close up and portrait work plus have many other uses:
EF 50mm f/1.8 STM
EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
On your budget I recommend you stay away from L lenses unless you really have a need for professional grade lens construction, which I doubt. Most people don't, even when they think they do. Go for image quality. Canon makes a number of non-L lenses that provide excellent IQ for some very reasonable prices. I have the 85 1.8 and it produces images the equal of any of my L's. Just be aware that your camera's crop factor is going to affect the view perspective of a lens. The 85 is an excellent portrait lens on a full frame but could be a bit long for a crop sensor. So on and so forth.

I had the Canon 70D. The lens I used most on that camera was the Canon 17-55. I would have never sold that lens, but I moved to full frame and that particular lens is for Crop body only. It is the perfect combination in my opinion.

You have lots of choices, the Canon 18-135mm "kit" lens is a very adequate performer and may have come with your camera if you bought the kit. Look at the Tamron 16-300mm and the Sigma 18-300mm lenses for great range in a single lens. Canons 17-55mm F2.8 is very nice, but you will want to add a second lens like maybe the Canon 70-200mm F4L IS, then you will be carrying two lenses though.

I heartily agree with MT Shooter. I would also add the Canon EF-S 10-22mm and 15-85mm to that list as options. Until about a year ago, I had a 70d and those two were my favorite lens. Also, for less money at the wide end, the 10-18mm is pretty good. I also use the EF 70-300 and 70-200 F4 IS with satisfying results. IMHO, money spent doesn't necessary begat better images for the cropped sensor cameras.

I also had the Canon EF-S 17-55 which I used on my 60D and it was a great lens. I sold it when I bought my 6D and needed to get some full-frame lenses. If you are thinking of someday going to a full-frame Canon, then you might want to consider the EF 24-70 f/2.8 or the EF 24-105 f/4, both in the L series.
