Go with a FX lens. In the future you will be glad you did.

If you are going to buy an FX camera why not buying it now? If you are not don't use FX lenses.

My advice came from MT shooter. He said I may buy a full frame camera in the future, which I did. That was good advice he gave me.

Look at the Nikon 18-300 refurbished lens. I think they are on sale now for about $600. I know that will put you a bit over what you want to spend but I think you will appreciate not needing to change lenses. If you really can't spend that extra, then look at the Sigma 18-250 lens. It is a very good lens for around $400. Your camera choice is top notch. You will not be unhappy with it.

I have been very happy with my 18-140MM as my walk around lens but everyone I know who shoots wildlife eventually invests in a 200-500, 200-600 be it Nikon, Sigma or Tamron.

The camera is a fine choice. But, you could do better in terms of lens selection. The 55-300 does not focus particularly fast and 300mm will be a limitation unless you can get close-in such as shooting birds at a back yard feeder. For a general purpose lens, I'd look at the 18-105 DX or 18-140 DX for a general purpose walk around lens.

I have to throw another vote in for the Nikon 18-200. Find a version 1 without the zoom lock for less money and otherwise same lens.

I have the D7200 and several lenses, but the one that I keep on the camera most of the time is the 18-140, as it addresses most of the focal lengths I need. The only drawback to the 18-140, that I find, is that it tends to have some vignetting at different focal lengths, especially at the 140 end. Otherwise, I find it to be a sharp, versatile lens. For birding, though, you'd be better off looking for either the Tamron or Sigma 150-600 lens, as you will quickly find that 300mm will be too short many times. As for going FX (Nikon-speak for full frame), you will be stepping into a more expensive world, but will ultimately be worth it. I have been giving FX some thought, lately, but it may be beyond my means unless I can fund it somehow by getting rid of all my DX gear. As far as the Nikon 18-300 lens goes, from what I can determine, it's a fine lens, and will serve most of your needs, as long as you know that there are some minor issues with lenses with such a wide focal length, such as softness at both extremes, and some tend to have a bit of vignetting at certain apertures and focal lengths. As long as you are aware of that, you should be satisfied with the 18-300.

The d 7200 is a great camera. The 18-55 mm lens a is a great general photography lens. It focuses quite close and is optically good. It is cheap as well. The 55-300 is a good lens but focuses a bit slowly . The 70-300 is a bigger lens but focuses more rapidly and is more expensive (there are a few versions of this lens. you want the expensive one. ) If you don't need the reach the 55-200 is a nice small lens - easy to carry and optically good.

Have also moved up from a d7000 to the D7200 (refurb). You made a great choice and the Nikon refurb sale helps! If you do go with the 18-300 it is a great choice. Would suggest however that you also get a good, lightwieght tripod. VR is very handy, but shooting handheld or just setting up your shot can be a real chore without one.

I have a D7100 refurbished with an 18-140 kit lens and the 70-300 lens which I decided was better than the 55-300. Very happy with it. I shoot mostly birds. However, for a walk-around lens I wish I had gotten the 18-300 lens. I find myself having to change lenses a lot. So if I were doing it again, I would get the 18-300 and save my money for the 200-500 zoom, or the Tamron or Sigma 150-600.

I'm thinking about buying a refurbished Nikon D7200 from Nikon for $700.00. Along with the camera I'm looking at the AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f4.5-5.6G ED VR lens refurbished for $150.00 and the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VRII new lens for $250.00. I will be using the camera mostly outdoors for wildlife (Birds and other wildlife). Does this make sense buying refurbished or are there other cameras and lenses in this price range better. Can I get by with just the 55-300mm lens or should I buy both lenses. My first selection was the D3300 camera with the above mention lenses for around $700.00.This is my first camera and do not want to spend over the $1,100 amount. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please excuse my knowledge just a beginner........
I'm thinking about buying a refurbished Nikon D72... (show quote)

This is a great deal for a refurbed D7200. I would go for it. I got mine last April, a Nikon refurb, with 15 clicks on the shutter. It is an excellent body which I enjoy using very much. The lens I use as a walk around lens is a Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 II, which is the model with the zoom lock, and I am very satisfied with it. good luck with your purchase.

I keep the 18-140mm on most of the time and switch it out with a 35mm 1.8. Also use an older manual focus 75-300 for more reach. Had a 55-300mm it was pretty good lens.

At that price, please make sure the lens is covered by a US Nikon warranty. Most of these great prices on Ebay are for grey market and Nikon won't touch it. The seller may say US warranty but it is only through them and which company actually does the repairs in anyone's guess

There was a post about a low price on a Nikon lens found on Ebay. There's never an issue with warranties Nikon directly sold nor shops like Cameta, Adorama or B&H. Think we'd all agree low prices on new equipment sold on Ebay by stores like Abe's of Maine and 47th St is grey market w/o a solid warranty
