I'm thinking about buying a refurbished Nikon D7200 from Nikon for $700.00. Along with the camera I'm looking at the AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f4.5-5.6G ED VR lens refurbished for $150.00 and the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VRII new lens for $250.00. I will be using the camera mostly outdoors for wildlife (Birds and other wildlife). Does this make sense buying refurbished or are there other cameras and lenses in this price range better. Can I get by with just the 55-300mm lens or should I buy both lenses. My first selection was the D3300 camera with the above mention lenses for around $700.00.This is my first camera and do not want to spend over the $1,100 amount. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please excuse my knowledge just a beginner........

I really like my D7200. If they are factory refurbished, I would go for it.

The camera is a fine choice. But, you could do better in terms of lens selection. The 55-300 does not focus particularly fast and 300mm will be a limitation unless you can get close-in such as shooting birds at a back yard feeder. For a general purpose lens, I'd look at the 18-105 DX or 18-140 DX for a general purpose walk around lens.

You won't "get by" with the 55-300; you'll need the 18-55 standard zoom. I also like to take bird photos, but the 18-55 stays on my D5100 90% of the time, as I use the camera for general shooting as well.

Try the Nikor 18-300mm F3.5-4.6 lens.

I use the 18-300 as my walk around. It needs some post at 18.

That is about as good as you can do for $1100 and not buying used .....

Go with a FX lens. In the future you will be glad you did.

I have no problem with your choice, however, as a beginner do you really want to start off with a $1100.00 investment?????

The 55X300 is a great Lens. I use one and love it. Save your money, go for it. Also have a 18x140 on my 7200 and love it.

I had the 55=300 vr for bird watching in the back yard and it's fine for that. Don't spend $250 on a 18-55 vr lens as I just sold one like new for $50.00. they are all over for sale for much less than $250.00 usually less than $100.00. The Nikon D7200 is an excellent choice.

I have the D3200 refurbished that I bought from Nikon about 2 years ago and have never had any problems with it. As well, it came with the 18-55 and the 55-300. I go birding and found the 55-300 was okay to start, however, it does not have enough reach so I splurged this Christmas and bought the Sigma C 150-600 mm since now I am more serious with my photography as a hobby as well as the birding . My next purchase later this year will be the D7200. Good luck.

I would get this right away and look for a Nikon 18-200mm VR

Yeah, I agree, look for a used 18-300 VR as a combo for your original two choices. To really shoot wildlife well, however, you're gonna need a bigger lens.
