I was picking apricots yesterday and almost stepped on this guy while he was out hunting. They are one of my favorite lizards. They have a semi-prehensile tail and are arboreal. Occasionally I will see them hunting in the shrubs above the ground level.
Glad you didn't step on the little fellow. Nice picture!

Good call. They used to be in the genus Gerrhonotus when I studied them in school. This is E. multicarinata multicarinatus - The California alligator lizard - which is just one of the subspecies of the Southern Alligator lizard. :thumbup:
