Digital opens up a whole new world of learning. Jump in, challenge yourself, and enjoy. Then decide whether you want to continue with film.

This is my first post having recently discovered the forum, so please excuse if this seems a little long winded.
Back in the 90's I was heavily into film photography, family commitments required a hiatus and I stashed my cameras away. Now I find myself with the time and interest to get back into the hobby. I currently have safely put away my Minolta 3xi and 9xi plus a host of lenses and accessories. To throw something else in the mix my wife had found out my interest and had gotten me a kit consisting of a Nikon D5100, several lenses and accessories wrapped up in a really nice backpack case for all.
Should I expand on the new tech, is there any value in my old Minolta kits. Does anyone think they could be considered trade inable to expand my Nikon kit. Thanks people

That is what I did with three of my cameras = Two Minoltas and Lenses -- and A Medium format (120 roll film) "Omega 100".

Listing and selling are two different things. Do a custom search in eBay and look at those, if any that have sold. This is the only way you can get a true idea of value on eBay.

Welcome.
The 9xi on Ebay is listing from about $40.00-$100.00 depending on condition. So not a lot of value but better than nothing.

I got rid of my two Pentax SLR's around 2002 or 2003 - back when kids in Photography class were required to use film SLRs. Now, unless the camera has serious collector value, they are pretty much worthless. Is film better in any way? Some say so. I say, even if shooting film was better in some way, why would you want to go to all the trouble? Go digital and never look back. I did that in 1998.

I don't do photography professionally, I do it for fun! What you called troubles are the fun parts.

Really? I hardly think going to the store to buy different ASA films; shooting only 12 or 24 or 36 exposures; taking exposed film back to processor; waiting a couple days; going back to the processor to pay and pickup....doing any of those chores would be fun (for anybody).

Besides, I did all that for about 30 years. If it was ever fun doing the above, I maxed out about 1977.

I think you did not understand the intent of my post.

Not really doing so I would miss a big part of the fun. After complete the shooting I would go into my darkroom and develop the film and then making prints. And yes I do color and not B&W.

Yes, I do have a comprehension of this simple concept of listing and why I said listing. But that is why the range and likely they sell in this range. A good starting point to determine a value range. Of course you could have provided actual selling prices rather than this snide remark. I just chose to not research it as the OP would be able to do this, but the quick look at Ebay was easy to see a trend.

It didn't seem like a snide remark to me, but rather good advice.

Thanks John...no matter what somebody says these days somebody is going to be offended by. I share my experiences so others can learn from them and yet some people view my sharing as if I've put them down in some horrible way. I don't understand this mindset at all. Maybe it's how I say things, I am rather direct and really hate beating around the bush.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions, including a number of really informative links. I think I'm going to pull the old 35mm out, dust them off and run a couple of rolls of film through them to see how they survived being stashed away. Then go from there.
