Susan....there is ALWAYS the next piece of equipment. It's like your closet....really....you could get along with the clothes and shoes that you have now, couldn't you? But you still shop, don't you?

I do not shop as much as I used to! These days I mostly buy what I need - such as replacing things that are worn out.

But you are right - it seems like we always have our eye on something new. I still have a couple of lenses on my wish list. It's just that I don't want to fall into the GAS money pit, so planning purchases based on need has been my shopping strategy. Of course, I do tend to "need" things that are improvements on what I already have!...

My daughter has been taking pretty good pics of the kids with her cell phone and the nice thing about it is that it's always handy. She's always wanted a camera like my D7000 (I now have a D800, too), so I may upgrade my crop camera to the D500 and give the D7000 to her (we both have b'days in May, so that may be a good time). I told her it doesn't have wi-fi and she's fine with that. She's used to loading photos directly to fb from her phone, but it's gonna take an extra step with the camera. I also have a nice lens to give her. When I bought my Nikon 6006 film camera, a 35-80mm lens came with it. It's really a nice lens and works great on the D7000.

Sounds like a good plan, takes care of this birthday! Your daughter will enjoy the D7000 (I'm still enjoying mine, even though also now have a D810), and can also borrow some of your FX lenses (if you will let her...).

Thanks George,
That really means a lot to me. I shot weddings and portraitures for many years, using my Bronica, and my RB67 for Portraits. When the new digital came into play, I made the switch. Everyone loved my work but me. I still feel that something is missing. maybe it's me. Maybe I'm losing the drive? I have plenty of equipment, I just thought that a 5D mark III or IV would return me back to my RB67 :-).

Thanks

You know after learning you shot weddings and portraiture for a number of years you could probably teach a course in photography. That is a very tough business. I would buy the 5D mark III or IV and spend some time using it. When I switched from film to digital I bot a camera (T3) and shot hundreds of pictures. Sold the camera to KEH Camera along with three film cameras. Currently I use a EF 24-105 f4.0L and a EF 24-70 f2.8L on my Canon 6D. Shot portraits for a church over a four year period and both lenses worked well under tough conditions. The 24-105 is a walk around lens when I travel. My biggest mistake was spending too much money on a EF 16-35 f2.8L. I really don't need such a wide lens. You probably won't learn much about photography skills in a class but it would be fun working with other photographers. My very best to you and have fun.

First I would like to thank each and every one of you for patients in helping me to navigate my way around this forum. This is my very first forum. Also, thanks to each and everyone for all of your comments and fountain of knowledge that you have shared with me. Not only did you give me plenty to think about, but, you also gave me ideals that inspired me to get back out there and take more of the photos that I like to take. When I first started in photography, my love was taking photographs of old Barns, houses, and trains.
Because of the equipment that I already have, and the types of Lens that I have, I have decided to purchase the
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens first and wait for the 5D Mark IV. After reading your many comments I have decided to go
for quality glass first. I cannot thank all of you enough.

I have the new 5D Mark IV, and I love it. I have a 70D as well, and I love it too. I almost upgraded to the 80D and thought better of it. So I just went for it, and got the New Mark IV instead. I have never owned a full frame camera before, so I can not advise on the Mark III. But, if I had owned the Mark III, I would not have upgraded to the Mark IV. I just don't think that the minor changes camera manufacturers make, to get you to buy the newest ones, are justified. Hence, the reason I did not go from the 70D to the 80D. Just like car manufacturers, after you buy one, they come out with a new feature on the model you have. That is what they do. Makes you rethink trading, or purchasing another one. So, I drive it for a while (long while, since they are way more expensive than a camera-ALMOST!!)And after I have gotten my money's worth, and I can afford a new one, then I might trade. Now that I have a great FF, I will not be upgrading to anything else for a long time. But, I will however, purchase more lenses when I can afford to. Guess my point is, if you have not purchased a camera in a long time, I'd invest more and get the latest version of the model you are looking at. If you have nice glass already, then you will be set!

Hello all of my photography friends. First just a little about myself. I started in photography about 38 years ago with a Canon DTL 33mm camera and I got hooked. In my list of cameras you can find Bronica's, RB67, hasselblads, then came the Digital. Canon 40D, 70D and now the 7D mark II. My question is I'm about to spend a little money and like your opinions to help me make a decision.
Should I purchase a "Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L Lens or a Canon 5D mark III?

I agree!! I dove in without testing the water. I came out fine, and I love my camera and lenses. But Taking a few courses, is good advice!!

This is a telling answer!

I'm going to make a suggestion that you might not like, but it might end up wetting your appetite to get back out there shooting.

Find a class or course that covers portrait photography and lighting techniques, which sounds like it's your genre of choice, and concentrate on learning everything that you can. Think of it as starting from scratch. You'll be surprised what you'll learn from a new to you instructor.

You should look for a class that meets several times with assigned homework to go out and shoot using those new techniques that you've learned in class. Make sure that you check out some references of previous students. Ask them what they liked about the class, but also ask them what they didn't like about the class.

I sounds like you just need a push to get back out there, and a class could just be the stimulation that you need!

I don't claim to be an expert in anything that I do, and I learn new things every day.

Over the years I've taken several classes, and I've wished that I could have afforded to take more. Take the money you had intended to spend on new equipment and use it for the stimulation of your creative juices!

Wait to purchase a new camera or lens, you might want to get some of the following instead! Flashes, reflectors, light stands, portable backdrops, colored gels for your flashes, and the list of studio lighting equipment could go on!
