As you can see there are lots of opinions about what to bring.

Make your own decisions. Alaska and the inside passage are a beautiful place. Just remember you can always leave gear in your cabin, but if you don't have it with you it's of no use.

You have been given lots of advice, some good, some not so much.

There is something to be said about going light. If you are on the trip for the experience, then it may well be a better experience without the camera gear, but if getting the photo is important to you then you need to take all the gear that will fit into your carry on. Your choice. Both have good points and bad points.

My wife always takes a point and shoot. I always take all the gear I can carry. We enjoy different things on our trips, but by working to accommodate each others interests we both have enjoyable vacations.

If it was our family we would spend two excursions on trips activities that were designed to maximize the chance for photography and we would spend a couple others on activities that my wife would enjoy and that we can remember for a lifetime.

As for Vancouver, if I understood you correctly you meant the city and not the Island. There are several good museums on the Vancouver area. The one on the campus of Simon Frazer University is extraordinary.

Stanley Park is interesting and the aquarium there is pretty good. There are two long suspension bridges in the Vancouver area. The more famous one is a tourist attraction, the other leads to beautiful hiking opportunities.

If you are spending time on Vancouver Island if you go west from the terminal around the south side of the island there are some amazing tide pools. They are giant holes in smooth rocks, maybe 10 feet deep with lots of marine life on the sides. Also Nanaimo has some great murals, and the Natural History Museum when you first get to the island is pretty good.

Study the internet, look for what is available in each location and what your interests really are and then plan accordingly. Remember ultimately it's up to you.

no i know how to use it i'm asking for advice on which gear would be best to bring to Alaska as I've never been. I've heard a lot of people say you want 500-600mm for capturing things far away but I've also seen some people say they only took 200-300mm and been happy so I'm asking what gear that I have should be brought on the cruise and/or what gaps should I try to fill

Last year we did a land tour and I took the 100-400 and a 24-70. Could have lugged more equipment but was happy with the selection.

this is similar to how we work, my wife mostly uses a point and shoot and will venture up ahead or on her own while I take some pictures with the SLR, except when there is art somewhere like in the Hagia Sophia, in those cases she takes the SLR and gets the pictures she wants.
