That is a nice feature. I'm trying to find a way of saying this without sounding "catty" {a term our felines hate}, but Pentax has been doing that sort of thing for some time now via the system that was already providing their In Body Image Stabilization, although my K-30 can provide at most 1 degree of correction.

No worries.

Interesting topic. Coming from a D700, where the only use I had for the pop-up was for commander mode. It did a poor job for a flash even fill in. If I need a flash, I use my much maligned SB900. For fill in I use a SB400. Have been experimenting with the high ISO'so of the D500. So far I am impressed at it'seems ability to take decent exposures where my D700 couldn't focus without the focus assist lamp. I don't miss the pop up. Prefer having a 100% view finder an having the SB 400 in pocket if needed.

That's a possible motive for eliminating the pop up flash but it might backfire because it may cause some loss of sales for that particular camera. IMHO, it was an ill advised decision.

I've owned a D70s, D200, D300S, D700 and now a pair D800s - I have never used the pop up flash. external flash with wireless triggers, or in the worst case, mounted on the hot shoe, but turned around or to the side for bounce. For an advanced camera a pop up flash is about as useless as teats on a bull. It's no great loss as far as I am concerned.

Just checked out some specs on the upcoming Nikon D500. It is impressive to say the least. 20.9 megapixels, 3.2" moveable LCD, 4K video, and rapid fps. Dual slots for memory cards including either SDHC or XQD card. Low and behold, no pop up flash. The only DX format camera without one. Is this a plot to sell more Nikon Speedlights?

It's the most expensive DX camera Nikon has to offer. Top of the line cameras don't have pop up flash. Well it could be that many of the pop up flash fans said it's for triggering remote flashes but the D500 can do radio trigger.

I mistakenly started using my D500 – 14-24 on a real estate shoot today. I normally use my D810. I do use off camera flash. My D500 did an outstanding job. Every time I have used the D500 I have been super impressed. I don't use a popup flash on any of my cameras nor do I shoot TTL. Just not an issue.
