I'd save the 149 for a fun new lens and just go out and practice. There's so much free information and education on the internet (for anything, not photography only) that I never understood buying dvds and books for more than a few dollars.
I did buy it and there was some good information on it, however you can get the same from a book or sometimes the internet (internet advice is not always reliable). I am a visual learner rather than read and learn, that is why I purchased this set of DVD's. There are practice (or lab) sessions on the DVD's that make learning easier.

Take a look at Kelby Training. My son gave my a year subscription and I found it very worth while BUT Kelby gives a 24 hour free full access to their lessons. Each lesson is about 2 hours. Even if you don't want to shell the monthly or yearly cost I highly recommend doing an all nighter (12 lessons or so; less if you don't have the stamina). Take some time selecting the courses you are most interested in. At any time you can preview a lesson by watching the first introductory lesson. Each instructor has their own personality so some you may like more that others.
gdwsr- Where would I find these Kelby lessons? Is there a website to go to?
One of the best I learned from was micheal the maven. It can be found on the web he has home work available too. As well as a blog I bought the cd for my camera he is a canon guy.
Well there you go, couldn't be any good it has the "C" word in it and doesn't start with "N".

When I said free, I didn't just mean literature. Youtube..? There is a plethora of free info out there!
