I saw one today in flight here in Indiana. Some times they do not migrate, especially in mild winters.

Thanks Old Timer from another old timer! We are having a mild winter, so far, at least.

Ever heard the term Snowbird?

Seriously, migratory patterns of birds have changed as the climate changes.

Thanks rgrenaderphoto! Never thought of a GBH as a snowbird. Maybe I need to rethink things. lol It has been a mild winter, and one has suggested, it is probably young and didn't feel the urge to go south to the breeding grounds.

This great blue heron photo was taken Friday in Jacksonville,Il. Most have left the area 2 months ago. I have no idea why this one is still here. It seems healthy and is able to fly.

Very nice image,
They stay around here most of the winter

Thank you Manglesphoto! Glad to hear that. Maybe I can travel a bit farther south from Hannibal and see more of them.

I live in Jacksonville, they are here year round. And the water never freezes over.

I saw one a few days ago in a marsh just outside of Boston, MA. I'd always thought that they went south for the winter. I don't know what this one will
do when everything ices over.

Thanks 2Dragons! From what others have said, the breeding adults migrate, while the younger ones stay north and eat rodents after freeze over.

Thanks for that information. I was really worried about that big bird wondering what he/she would find to eat when the winter decides to really set in around here.
