Not sure which camera body you have but many have GPS built in. Suggest you check your manual, only problem is it really eats up batteries quickly.

How do you remember that location you saw at 10AM and you knew would be fantastic later/earlier in better light? Do you use an app? Which one? There are many, but mostly for finding your car at the mall (my solution:don't go there). I am really tiring of racing the light and desperately trying to find the spot I passed earlier. What say the Hoggers?

Oh and sorry, no Canon vs Nikon. JPEG vs. Raw. But I'm sure this question will somehow be controversial.

I just take a quick snapshot of it with my smartphone so it has the gps coordinates attached.

My cameras record GPS coordinates, time, date, and exposure data in the EXIF metadata of each file...

Hi This is why I always carry a pencil and paper to write and draw
All the other answers are good but mine works in any weather and don't need batteries, just your brain.

Get a camera with GPS. Or, see if your phone will tag photos with GPS locations and take a picture of the location with it.

I usually just make a mental note of it. However, sometimes that's not quite enough.

In Aug. 2007 while I was teaching one of our seven kids how to drive, we came across this barn about fifty miles from where we live. Very nice, but maybe much better in better light. Fast forward nine years. I headed out alone to find this barn with my upgraded camera & a beautiful day in the forecast. I knew exactly what town it was in but didn't remember the street. I drove around town for about an hour and a half trying to find it ... finally gave up. While driving out of town about two miles south, I glanced to my left and saw it again. I could have sworn it was on one of the streets just on the edge of town, but a street that ran through town.

Well, needless to say, my memory is pretty good, but not infallible. Photos of that barn below.

I had a similar experience about 20 years ago. I was working a project where I made photos (4x10 inch film) of people in Northern New York using their porches on a regular basis. I was in a 3 county area and all 3 were on the Federal register of impoverished areas. I'd drive the back roads and make note of interesting house/porches. I saw a great looking porch one morning, but no one was on it. I made note of it...in my head...thinking I'd return to see if anyone used the nice recliner strategically placed on the porch. Later, when trying to find it again, I had no luck. I drove mile after mile, county road after county road. But wasn't able to repeat the route that got me there on my earlier drive about. It would have been a great photo, too.

Now, since I'm still an aimless wanderer much of the time, I do an much as I can to capture data on location. Cell phone app, hand written notes, voice recordings as well as photos and sometime video with my phone. Once burned and all that...

If you can't remember where you were when you took the picture, perhaps you should be taking more pictures. People can then look at them and tell you if there is some telltale in the picture that is located nearby!!!

I usually use Sharpshooters technique --- it's in the noggin' somewhere --- been doing that for some 65 years as it works for me; most all places I revisit have a season for revisiting; either a time of day or a time of year, fall, winter, spring, whatever. And, to be quite frankful, after visiting a favorite spot for years you grow tired of it as you have so many pictures already in your files that you're ready for a new adventure somewhere else.
My philosophy has been that at any given time at any location in the universe a perfect picture is waiting to be taken.
Use whatever works for you,

I find landmarks to lead me back there to that spot then walk the location for a couple seconds to find the spot I like the most.

Probably because I made my living as an OTR trucker, I have no problem remembering where a location is. It's part of doing business for 30 + years. In fact, since retiring 10 years ago my wife and I return (a couple trips a year) to one or more of those spots I passed years ago but unable to stop at that time. By the way, returning like that has it's good and not so good outcomes. Often times I realize on the return that what looked intriguing some time ago is just plain boring today!

i use a nikon df digital imaging device for location photos. then go back, as the noted time of year and make my pictures using my medium or large 5x7 format cameras.
