Thanks for the comments but where were you charged customs fees, going in SA or coming back into the US?, I have never experienced such a problem.

Close-ups? At 300 mm and minimal distance is all you need. Macro is a different story but I really do not see the point of using macro when you try to open your horizon...

The softness of most lenses can be corrected first by using the camera fine tuning (look up videos and web page on how to do this) and then by using post processing trickery...

Thank you for the good input, I will do the fine-tune of the 28-300, good suggestion - just so happens I bought the Spyderlenscal!

My favorite all in one lens in both EF and F mount is my 28-300, on both crop and full frame. When I'm only bringing one lens and depending on where, Canon or Nikon, I either take my 5Dsr with 28-300L or my D500 with 28-300 (because I don't have the Nikkor 18-300), but that's me.

Hire a porter to carry your stuff since you seem incapable of making a decision despite having all this stuff.

You know how to use all of it, right???

Now wouldn't it be wiser to go out and practice instead of worrying about what other people do? I yet to see an example of yours that would make anyone want to shoot raw. On another note, I am 100% sure that every one of us could criticize something that you are doing wrong. Your narcissism is off the charts. You worry about people having stuff and not knowing what to do with it? Lol! Women are being raped every few minutes, kids go to sleep hungry, we still have WARS going on in 2016 and that is what gets you upset? You need a reality check.

Mind your own business.

Sorry OP for off topic, but this idiot actually started a thread complaining about people having stuff and asking questions about it.

Good luck on your trip OP!

Don't be - but just be aware. We have all kinds.

Look at the very last line in his initial post

I am going to Germany for Karneval and will be taking many shots of parades, indoors and outdoor closer in shots and finally a night time party in a large hall for a couple hundred people with not great lighting. The equipment I own are D7100 with Nikkor 18-300 lens, D750 with Nikkor 24-70 2.8 VR, Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR, Nikkor 28-300 3.5 VR and finally Nikkor 200-500. Also a thinktank airportinternational V2.0 and an SB700 flash. What set up do you recommend for the camera/lens to take with me? I am leaning towards the D7100 with the 18-300 to give me reach (450mm crop setup) and the D750 with the 24-70 2.8 for closer in shooting, plus the 28-300-I have put this configuration into the bag and it fits (barely). Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One camera, one lens. I prefer to travel with a compact camera. If it's going to be a strictly photographic trip, then bring everything you have. If you want to enjoy the trip ( and I mean anyone else traveling with you, too), then bring very little. Of the gear you mention, I would bring the D750 and 24-70mm.

Take the lightest outfit you can. From your description what you are going to take pictures of you can easily eliminate the 200-500 (your kidding about actually taking this arn't you, you just listed this to strut your stuff didn't you) I would take the D7100 and a 18-200 lens. Yes, I know you did not list that lens, but you also asked for our advise. And so I am giving it to you, the 18-300 is too heavy to take and your other stuff is too heavy to take, are you really serious about this trip, or is it you just wanted to impress us by listing all of your equipment. You are really over thinking if your serious about taking all this stuff with you. Again, if it was me, and it is not, I would take the D7100 and an 18-200 lens and the SB700 flash and that's it. Travel lite, travel right. Travel safe and enjoy your trip. Remember, it's not the equipment you take with you, it's the images you take that is important. TRAVEL LITE.

Take a second body for backup.
Very good idea! On my trips right now I carry my D7100 with 18-200 VR2 and pack my old D50 body and older 18-200 VR as backups (old lens still works fine but is a little "gritty" in zooming). I rarely encounter a shot I cannot make with that combination, and it's a lot easier to carry than a bag full of stuff (that I probably wouldn't have time to delve into and make lens changes, anyway).

Back in my film days I carried a Nikon FE with a Vivitar 28mm f/1.8 loaded with ASA 800 film for indoor shots and a Nikon N70 with Tamron 28-200mm zoom loaded with ASA 400 film for other shots. (Yes--I carried both at the same time, with the FE on a short strap hanging at top chest level and the N70 somewhat lower down. I really looked the stereotypical tourist.)

I think you'll do fine with the D7100 and 18-300 zoom. I've never tried a monopod, but it might be useful. I just look for ways to stabilize the camera using what structure is available. The VR2 feature is very helpful.

FWIW, I've been to Bonn several times, but never for the Karneval. The Minster there is quite nice. My church engaged the Orgelbau Johannes Klais in Bonn to build our new organ and I've visited their facility 3 times. (We love our organ, too!)

The 24-70 is a great lens, but bulkier and heavier than similar lenses that aren't quite as sharp. The 18-300 covers the same range so why take the 24-70? You might want to pick up a 1.8, or 2.8 lens for interior shots, but the tele lens will be nice in Church interiors. Take one camera and a pocket back up. A good small, light flash can come in handy, mine is the Nikon SB-400, but the pop-up flash is surprisingly good as a fill in.
Have fun and enjoy.

Too much stuff! D7100 with that 18-300, and get yourself a 35 f1.8 for the interiors or night shots. That's it!

Totally agree with that. I had almost the same combo...7100, 18-200 and the 35. You'll need nothing else.

I am also in agreement that you are taking too much for your trip to Germany. your D750 with 28-300 VR and a lens like that 35mm f1.8 suggested by one of the members of this forum should satisfy your needs.
A tripod could be useful for night photography subjects and landscapes.

Read the post "SOOC abused by fraudsters". The last part about irritation. This is exactly what was mentioned about irritation. You were intelligent enough to purchase all that equipment, but cannot decide which of it to use? My advice is to sell it all and get a bridge camera. Then you will have to make only one decision, should I take the camera on the trip or not!
