I use two methods, usually I send my photos to phone/tablet with either an EyeFi sd card, Use my cameras in built wifi to send to my phone/tablet, providing your settings are correctly set up the GPS location will be inserted into Exif data.
The other method is to take a shot of your location such as station, famous landmark or town or village names,

How do you remember that location you saw at 10AM and you knew would be fantastic later/earlier in better light? Do you use an app? Which one? There are many, but mostly for finding your car at the mall (my solution:don't go there). I am really tiring of racing the light and desperately trying to find the spot I passed earlier. What say the Hoggers?

Oh and sorry, no Canon vs Nikon. JPEG vs. Raw. But I'm sure this question will somehow be controversial.

GPS, either in the camera or an app on a cell phone. Lots available. Then Lightroom can display a map showing where the shots were taken.

I use a highly technical device called a spiral notebook. I carry it and a corresponding device (many younger people may need instructions on its use) called a ball point pen. I date each page with the current date and shooting locations or potential locations and notes about them. No, it isn't like putting it in my phone which I often do too but I keep it in a pocket on my fatigue shirt. I use my cell phone calendar for appointments and important stuff. Photography notes go into a note pad. And my note pad is in my camera bag until I get ready to go shoot.

I carry a very small note book and write down address info on shots I like or would like to take. I have a really good memory for places so I don't need coordinates to get me back. I also use that notebook for reference information. What ND filter did I use, exposure, light direction, etc. etc. I have now filled 10 of those boys. I have revisited several sites when the light gets interesting.

When I am in my car I enter the location into the GPS. I also use the map folder on LR and save best as presets

A couple of reminder pics and and note written down help. If really impressed set date and time on your calendar in your smart phone. Have alarm set that will provide time to get back to spot. Check weather for area your interested in. Recheck when alarm goes off. Time permitting find a companion.

I try to keep it simple I just take a picture of a steno pad and with a marker, I write it down, or I'll take a wide angle "placement shot" of some sort of main feature, like a sign or something ID'ing the location and go from there. Hope this helps. Failing the "steno pad" I'll use any sort of paper pad. big enough to take a marker. JMO, FWIWSC. ;-) <K>

Pocket day timer and a pencil. Day timer is with me at all times. Tried the modern equipment but found it took longer to enter the info than a quick note in the pocket day timer.

These days the cell phone can take a shot establishing location and a voice or video memo to make notes. maybe even bring up a map and find out when the sun will be where you want it later in the day.

I use my Canon GP‑E2 for all my cameras and when it doesn't interface with my older cameras, I just put it into log mode. Like the fact it doesn't eat off my camera battery and last for days on a rechargeable AA battery. Definitely WAY too pricey but has the advanced feature of indicating what direction I was pointing towards that the OEM GPS units don't have. Biggest caveat is the hotshoe loss.

Prior to this I was using an Android app called GeoTag Pro which worked very well and seamlessly transferred a detailed log file either from an online upload or network transfer. No longer in use because I have now downgraded to a dumb phone.

If your camera doesn't have a gps, snap a second photo with your smartphone. My iPhone always records the location. Programs like Picassa will easily display the location of the shot.

GPS on my Nikon. iPhone APP when using my a7R-II. Also, the iphone automatically tags each image it acquires with gps co-ordinates.

"Notebook - Every Photographer Should Carry One." = A.A.

I keep a hand written note book. However.... In this "day and age" = Take a photo of the area and a sign - and or make notes on the I-Phone, if you have one...

Me.... "Old School Here" = I keep a n=hand written notebook.
