I travel quite a bit each year and I made a video of how I handle backup here:

In addition, I also recently upgraded to a new iPhone 7 Plus with 256GB of memory. I have a program on my Mac called Media Trans that allows me to use the phone as a flash drive. So, when I'm out, I backup my normal ways (as shown in the video) and I'm also now backing up to my iPhone as well. The transfer rate on the old phones was unbearably slow, but this new one isn't bad at all.

If I'm going for a week, like Maine, I take the laptop. This way I can have a larger view of the shots evenings, and also copy to the laptop. For weekend trips I just save when I get home.

I recently lost my SD card with my vacation pictures on it !!! I need recommendations on some storage device that I can use to transfer images every night to a device from the camera.I do not take my computer with
me on vacation.I saw an ad for Western Digital Wireless Portable Hard Drive but it had mixed reviews.I read UHH every day and I know that there are readers out there that have great knowledge and experience .
I welcome all comments. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all !!!

Most places you stay have a computer center. Buy a 256GB thumb drive. You can plug it into their USB port, transfer your images to this solid state drive, then to your computer when you are home. Delete the bad photos from your card and keep as many on your card as possible. Carry extra cards. Can buy some on road.

Not trying to be snide or anything like that but just try very, very hard not to lose it next time and it won't cost you a penny.

In my obinion, MtnMn hit it out of the park with this information:

You don't need to bring a computer. This thing will let you back up your SD cards to something else: anything with a usb connector. For example large SD cards (128 or 256 GB) or a hard drive. It costs about $39.

You control it through your phone.

It is also a spare battery for your phone.

After looking at your reference, I ordered one! That's one of the beauties of this forum.

I do not usually lug a computer, but I do usually have an iPad or iPhone along. So I pack the Apple Camera Converter that has the right connector plug. The one that is easiest is the one with the SD card slot.

Sorry to read this :-( I have a Western Digital My Passport wireless HDD. Little pricey at $120 but it's a 1tb portable hard drive. It also has an sad card reader built into it. You'd need a smartphone, tablet or laptop to view the drive or transfer your sad to it.

N, if you're already losing SD cards, what will keep you from losing a different storage device? Now you've got two things to hang onto!! LoL
Why don't you just get a card big enough to hold all the shots you take on that vacation and NEVER take it out of the camera.
Maybe a carabiner to hook the device to your belt?!?!
SS

I agree with SS. I have a 64gb CF card and a 64gb SD card in each of my cameras and am no where near filling them up on the tour. Ofcourse there's always the possibility of losing the camera and the images with it....

I am of the Old school, where you cannot back up often enough or too much. When I travel I use an EyeFi card the send each image directly to either my iPad or iPhone, then back up to a smaller notebook, and external USB drive each night. I NEVER clean the SD chip, and never edit an image, until I have three (count them - 3) copies. I've never lost an image.

Use multiple SD cards on the trip; put a new card into the camera every 1-2 days. Store the filled cards in the safest place you can think of - in your wallet, with your toothbrush, or whatever place you think that would be. Look upon the SD cards as mini external hard drives.

I'm with "rook" on this.I just returned from a weeks(2WKS) long trip that was exclusively for "picture-taking". I took 18 sd cards of varying capacity & only used eight. The trip had so much going on, day to day, that I didn't have or take the time to edit my pics. I kept the cards in the room safe with my passport. If you have a tendency to lose or misplace things, it's easy to keep a number of cards with your "SAFE-Stuff". RJM P.S. I "number" all the cards I own, and log which cards I used on which day shooting. Like someone else said, just keep them all in a safe place like where you keep your passport, or medicine case. Why edit each days' shooting each evening, have a cocktail or two, edit them at your leisure once home...
