Hello there - I am thinking of upgrading my Nikon D90 to the D610. My current lenses: AF Nikkor 18-35mm ED IF, 1:3.5-4.5D and
AF-S Nikkor 18-200, 1:3.5-4.6 G1 ED DX SWM VR IF

What are you thoughts on the Nikkor 50mm F18 AF lens that would come with the D610. I know it only costs about $160. Do you think it is a good prime lens for both the D90 and the D610.

My D90 would be passed on to my daughter.

Any information you can provide is appreciated.

Mostly, I am interested in taking photos of my dogs, some close-up floral photography, the birds in my backyard, landscapes, a little architecture, and my grandchildren: 5 year old twins and 6 month old.

Any assistance you can provide is appreciated.

Eileen, the 50mm f1.8 is a good lens. Better is the f1.4, if you can afford the upgrade.

I have that lens. It came with my Nikon Df. Is it worth $160.00? Absolutely yes! And more.

i have it and it is a really great lens when i do use it..in fact it is a terrific start off lens and a must have in your primary lens group..personally i find it a bit limiting for my style of photography but occasionally i will bring it out and play around with it...if you're looking for clarity it is a sharp lens..the only difference is the aperture ..do you really need it a tiny bit more open for low light situations to justify the difference in cost?...you won't be unhappy with the 50mm f/1.8...enjoy it..

I do a lot of portraits and the 50mm is one of my all time favorites. I bought my first Nikon 35mm in the early 70's which came with a 50mm 1.4 and can't remember ever not having a 50. I still have the old manual 1.4 that came with my first used Nikon F and other than a few battle scars it still functions perfectly. I considered the 1.4 when shopping for one for my first digital, a D70, but decided on the 1.8 and have been very happy with it. Enjoy your new camera and lens.

The one that came with the Df is a slightly different version and cost a little bit more than $160.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens. I like the new Tamron SP series prime lenses because they have stabilization. I got the 45mm f/1.8 for my Nikons. The new lenses in the series are the 35mm f/1.8, 45mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, and 90mm f/2.8 macro.

I am a big fan of shooting with a 50mm lens on a full frame camera like the D610.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens is a very good lens. I use the 50mm f/1.4, but the f/1.8 will give you a lot of enjoyment. It is a fast lens which will allow you to use it in low light situations indoors for photographing your grandchildren and dogs. It will also be very good for architecture and flowers.
It will be serviceable for landscapes, though often times a wider angle lens in the 20mm to 35mm range is recommended for landscapes.
It won't be very good for birds though. I's difficult to get close to birds and a longer lens would be better.

50/1.8 is great to have. Small enough to throw in your pocket/purse, good performer and helpful in low light.

I think it's an extraordinarily sharp lens. I bought it when shopping for the the 50 f/1.4 (which at the time they were out of) so for $165 (at the time) what the hay...no regrets. On a D750, fantastic for general use...on a D7200 of D500, a nice little portrait lens.

I have the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 but the 1.8 is okay and either will work fine with all of your Nikon cameras.

Although the 50 1.8 G lens is great please also consider the 35 MM 1.8, might be a little more versatile for you cause it is a little more wide angle than the 50. But yes, the 50 is a great lens, fantastic IQ and sharpness, AND, it is a NIKON.

As said, consider also the 35mm 1.8 DX. Very good for the money.

But the 35mm DX: will there be vignetting on the D610?
