Low light of the sun and the birds start to get ready for the roost. I made several trips to Jefferson Island hoping to get a spoonbill to pose on that one high perch in the magic light at sunset.

This bird looks to be coming in to breeding colors. The spoonbills don't start till Feb here in florida. Do they start earlier there?? Nice capture.

Martian, This was from the nesting season this past June as February here is still too cold for any nesting. Jefferson Island, Avery Island and Lake Martian are the three major nesting site here in South Louisiana and all three are in full swing in late May to June. I need try Avery Island this year as the Great Egrets are there in greater numbers. Jefferson Island has the Spoonbills in great numbers and Lake Martian you need a boat the see the nest.

Nice job, John.
Exposure and focus spot-on!
Good to see a late sun image with no blown highlights in white plumage.
Good subject isolation with shallow DOF.

Dave, I was pushing the low ISO to its limits, with delay on MLU to reduce the low light noise.

That is a beautiful photo, John. The only thing I might change is to take about an inch of the dead space off the top.
