Interesting article from Nikon Rumors.

Their top ten of all cameras includes 5 nikons, and zero canons.

Wow! I'm shocked! A Nikon site has chosen Nikon cameras for their top choices over Canon?!?

Next we will find out that the Democratic Party favors Pres. Obama over Mitt Romney in Nov. ;) :-)

I Like that, nice comeback, next we'll have a Canon site chosing a Canon camera as top choice....??? What's wrong with this picture...?? LOL, LOL

Having looked at the specs for the D3200 and the D5100 there were only 2 items of significance. The 5100 has 16 mps and the 3200 has 24. For a prosumer the increase is of no significance unless you have a very large colour printer which only a professional would be able to afford. The other is that the 5100 has an articulating screen whereas the 3200 does not. For a keen amateur the swiveling screen is brilliant. I looked at the spec for the 3200 and decided that I preferred the 5100. A further problem of the increased mps for a prosumer is the increased transfer times because of the bigger file sizes. If you want a fixed screen and more gismos than the 3200 go for the D7000.

Magapixels can be important if you do significant cropping. I tend to do so often with wildlife photos.

The other thing I find significant is that the D5100 has two infared input ports for remote triggering: one the front and one on the rear. You can get the infared triggers for as little as $4 on Amazon and the Nikon one for about $15. I use it frequently when the camera is on a tripod and I want to reduce movement from pressing the shutter and also to take photos with myself included. That is one great use of the articulated screen as you you can swing it around and look to ensure your composition before firing. The D3200, like its D3100 predecessor, does not have these ports.

The D3200, like the D3100, has a "Guide" mode. It is very useful to those who are alergic to reading their manual. My daughter-in-law uses it all the time. I expect I'd have found it more annoying than useful and moved beyond it by now (8 months after purchase) but she still uses hers.

In my view you made a good choice but for others the D3200 can be an equally good choice.

I quite agree mtnMan and reducing movement further is that to see the screen when taking a portrait you select liveview which locks up the mirror so stops mirror slap. The d5100 also has help screens to explain functions as you select them. Perhaps the best model will be the D7100 which will pull together all the features of the current D7000, D3200 and the D5100 and maybe add a few more.

If they put an articulaed screen on the D7100 they'd have one extra purchaser!

Yes, the D5100 has those explanations but I found them lame and never use them. The Guide mode on the D3100/3200 is different...it takes you to what you need to do certain things.

Yes, rather proactive whereas the D5100 is passive and you need to have read the manual first to know what is available. Once there help tells you what the alternatives mean.

Actually the D3200 uses the sony 24mp sensor, and ties the NEX7 which has a tilting LCD screen. DXO gave the Pentax a score of 82 to 81 for the Nikon and Sony. To say that one sensor is better than another is nuts with such a small difference. They are 3 different cameras, (5 when you add in the A77 and another Sony). Given that these cameras all have quality sensors, choose based on other factors, such as size of camera, features, lenses you already own, feel, etc.
They are all capable of taking great photos, with the right lenses and the photographer behind the equipment that knows what to do.

Keep combining all the good and useful features of the various Nikons and it will turn into a real camera called a Canon.

And after 46 years of marriage you might think I'd be smarter than to say, "My mother's applie pie was much better..."
