Peterff, when I said wikipedia was vague, what I meant was that it didn't say a certain mm size was the start of "telephoto" lenses and moved on up from that size. This makes me wonder if there is a certain mm size that is the start of the telephoto lenses? I suppose it doesn't really matter.........just curious.
I do agree with you about asking 'what purpose' and on 'what camera' for whatever your needs are. Of course the camera, and lens would be different for whatever purpose you are trying to achieve. The responses to the original question is wonderful for me........I'm getting a real good feel of the better lenses through the opinions of the UHH members.

I agree. Getting a sense of the better lenses seems to be the primary objective and is a good discussion question. For example, one of my favorite lenses is the EF-S 10 - 22mm zoom, which is generally regarded to be L class from an optical perspective, although not L class build quality, but better than the EF-S 10 - 18mm which is also good optically but not so robust. However, the EF-S lenses are designed for APS-C sensors, so the 'favorite' criterion would get different results with a full frame EOS camera.

The problem is still that the term telephoto is not related to a specific focal length number measured in mm, inches or miles! Nor is telephoto interchangeable with long lens. There is a lot of complex technology wrapped up in these definitions and their use, so simple answers can be misleading.

However, your goal of getting people's opinions on both quality and usability is definitely a good one.

The 24-105L. Best walk-around lens there is. Stays on my camera 75% of the time.

While I couldn't say that I have an emotional connection to it, or call it a "favorite", for my real estate photography, I ONLY use my EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6. I change to longer lenses for other tasks, such as urban landscapes.

I, too, am partial to the L series 24-105 lens. But I really like the size, weight and "crisp" image quality of the 50mm prime.

My favorite lens is my 70-200 2.8 IS II. It's great in low light as well as for sports and portraits.

I stopped reading after this post, I'm sure most people have put this lens
- the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens - White, is the BEST LENS IN THE WORLD! Yes - it is heavy, but it simply does every job well. Sports, portraits, animals, landscape, weddings, parties.... I use mine for everything and people always say, "what gorgeous photos -- you're such a good photographer" and I'm thinking - nope just this bad ass lens. I paid $2500 when it first came out, and it was worth every penny. I will buy the mark III version -- if and when it comes out.

I liked the Sigma f1.4 18-35 it's a crop sensored lens however and gives an effective range of around 24mm to 50mm.

It's great to have such a fast lens at a wide angle. Usually shoot at around f8 and get fantastic results.

I've gotten away a tonne of times with a 50mm prime and a speed light. As long as Im not tempted to go below f3.5 Im alright :)

that's a hard one because it depends on the situation and I like every lens I own or I would sell it. But the best lens I've used (rented it four times) is the 300mm 2.8 II. Just incredibly sharp with extender too. This was from last Sunday's 49ers-Jets game at Levi's Stadium, shot at 600mm with the 2x extender on the 300.

Gee Regis, I was expecting a 800 5.6L and not a 400 F4L:) JK....

If you need a humbling experience Regis check out Rob Royce's bird photography. IMO he's one of the best out there. He photographs with an old 1DIV and IDx and a 800 5.6L mostly. He uses major separation with his subject and continues to have consistent near perfect exposures.

My EF-S 10-22mm USM lens is probably my favorite for my Rebel T1i.

I would have to say my 100-400 MK II is my favorite right now. I mainly do nature photography and this one has the reach I like. I really do have a great success rate with this lens. It's a heavy lens, but well worth the effort to carry around.

I agree with your assessment about the lens being big and heavy but consider the bigger and heavier EF 400mm f/2.8L II alternative and it seems light enough to satisfy my needs. 5 pounds and thousands of dollars are numbers that attract my attention. The most attractive feature i found was it's versatility, so many focal length options all in one lens. Then of course, are the extenders.
