I think all WD drives can be used but the Red drives are Enterprise drivees designed for RAID. I have only used the Black drives on my systems.

There are several youtube videos on setting up RAID systems with the NVMe drives and Z170 motherboards. It is a little tricky if putting the OS on the NVMe drive but it appears that it should work. The OP may have a motherboard incompatibility issue. - not sure. I would check if there is a BIOS update. Also, is Maxwell12 trying to install Windows to the Samsung 950 drive. If so, a driver has to be added during windows install - not just setting it in the BIOS.

Hi guys,

I am using the WD Black drives. As to if you can make it work, very well could be the mother board or my just not knowing how to set it up properly.

I have an ASUS x99-Deluxe II mother board, i7-6800K processor, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 2400 ram, and GTX 1060 Video card w/6 G of VRAM.
Using the Samsung Pro 950 in the M.2 slot for my system drive, a 250 GB SSD for storage and the 2 WD Blacks for Raw Files.

Two ASUS tech tried to make the HDs work in RAID and I think were getting a little pissed at me because I did not immediately accept that it
would not work. Once we got the board to accept the M.2 as the system drive and loaded, we then went back to set up RAID and (I don't remember exactly)
configure the sata drives to RAID. Once we did that, the M.2 did not show up. I guess because it's not a SATA drive. So, at
least with this board it did not like mixing and matching SATA RAIDs and a non SATA system disk..

Not saying it can't be done, but I'm kind of over it right now, and I must say I kind of like the GoodSync software to do what I wanted.

I saw the videos on YouTube also but don't know if they were setting it up as I was trying to do, and as I say, it make work with a different
motherboard or a more skilled computer tech. If you make it work I'd like to hear about it. I never saw being done on my board what I
was trying to do. The GoodSync will do the same thing as my original idea and give me a little more control as well.

Good luck

Phil

The motherboards I saw on YouTube were Z170 boards and not X99 so don't know. I'm going to give everyone it a try in January or February. I've always used WD blacks in my raid systems. The only thing I would have chaneed is to set the bios to raid before I started. But the m2 drives are new to me. It sounds like you even had trouble loading W10 onto the M2 drive. I wouldn't have expected that. The X99 boards are older than the z170 boards but do support the fastest system. It does sound like you have an excellent system!
