Honestly I can't pick one. What do you call a telephoto? If I had a bigger budget I would have more choices, and I would also choose more diverse subjects.

I use a lowly Canon Rebel T3i. The two most frequently lenses used are my EF-S 18-135 mm STM and EF-S 10 - 22mm USM. The EF 70 - 300 IS comes next following closely. After that, maybe my (adapted) FL 55mm f/1.2, (adapted) FDn 135mm f/2.0 and Samyang 8mm fisheye, not in any particular order. The (adapted) FDn 500mm f/8 reflex gets some use. The EF-S 60mm macro for some subjects, even the 50mm f/1.8 at times. Also Canon close up lenses (250D / 500D) on occasion. Even extension tubes.

Why? Different subjects and situations require different tools.

I try to carry more tools in my bag than hammers of various weights and styles. Every now and again a certain job requires a specialized tool. I've just bought one. If it works out I'll let you know! That'll be my next lens in the ship of fools....

Wikipedia says: "In photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length." I'm thinking anything over 200mm I would consider a telephoto lens. Thank you everyone so far for your opinions of which are your favorite lenses and why.

That's interesting, since it surely depends upon the film / sensor size, doesn't it? In 35mm terms (ff sensor) isn't an 85mm or 135mm considered a short or medium telephoto? In my situation, with an APS-C camera my FL 55mm f/1.2 is a portrait / short telephoto. My FDn 135mm f/1.2 would probably qualify as more than a medium telephoto. What does that do in M4/3 land? What is a wide angle in 6x7 land?

50mm = the normal lens --- Anything 51mm or higher is considered a telephoto -- 49mm & below = wide angle ---- At least that's what I remember the photography instructor telling us -- long-long ago

Interesting but somewhat vague question. Pretty much anything over 50mm is considered telephoto. Are you interested in prime only or prime and zoom. What about zooms that cover wide angle to telephoto.
I have several Canon EF lenses and a few EF-S lenses. My favorite lens is my EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens. It may not be the sharpest but it is the most versatile lens Canon makes and considering its focal range, it's sharp enough.

The 70-200 2.8. Its a great portrait lens and a great sports lens. It's weather sealed and I do a fair amount of photography where that is important.

My 17-40MM F/4 non IS. I do 90% landscape almost always from a tripod and it is great.

Also have 24-105MM with IS when I need a bit more reach with a small subset of landscape shots.

I have a full frame 5D.

Seeing as I also have a very limited budget for my 7DII ,I only have a couple lenses in my bag I traded in my 70 to 300 for a Tamron 16 to 300 and have been very pleased with the results ,as most of my shots are taken during my nature hikes with the dog on assorted area trails it is light weight and does a great job on everything from birds to buds although it can be a little soft at times especially at 300. I need to add a fast wide angle for landscapes and Stars, and am having trouble deciding between the Canon 100-400 L and the Tamron/Sigma 150-600 to improve my bird, BIF and animal shots,

Brent, it would be my 35mm f2.0. I make good use of the f stop both inside and out, depending on what I am attempting to do.

On my Canon 6D I generally use my 24-105 or my old old favorite from film days, my very very light Canon 24-85. On my 70D I never remove my Tamron 16-300.

My favorite in terms of utility is the 24-105 1:4 L IS. I have other non-telephoto lenses that I love for specific uses, but I find the 24-105 to be indispensable because of its size, versatility, and sharpness. As for creative images, my favorite is the 16-35 1:2.8 L ll; just a great lens.

For me the most used lens in my arsenal is the 24-105 4.0L. It's the most versatile travel lens I have, which includes the 24-70 2.8LII, 70-200 2.8LII, 100-400 L II and the 85 1.2LII. and I like to shoot a lot of travel photography. The longer lenses tend to go the the 7d2 and the shorter ones on the 5D3, though this not always and more as to what the situation calls for. The only lens I had and didn't care much for, was the 16-35 2.8LII - perhaps it was the copy I had or operator incompetence ... it just wasn't right for me.

Sigma 24-105mm lens. It can do 95 percent of my photography. I mount this lens on my Canon 6D.
