Thanks. On the first picture I took he didn't know but this is the third picture and he heard the shutter go off. I was waiting for doe to come out about 30 yards down when this spike walked towards me from behind that tree. He was about 5 yards from me.
Good shots. In general and this is for your information, shooting animals you can go with a close up or show the whole body of the animal in its environment. I think you did that to perfection with No.1.
Looking at the histogram in No.1 I see that you are missing on the dark and middle tonalities. I would correct for the dark in the histogram while a burning-in of the middle tonalities should improve the view by bringing some contrast. A light touch of sharpening should be enough.
The images from the 70-300 VR as you have seen are excellent.
