Two things come to mind.
1) Are they RAW files? The other computers may not know how to read these files.
2) If your computer is a Mac (like mine) you have to format the thumb drive for a PC. The Mac can read PC format and its own native format. PCs are more limited.

Did you transfer jpegs (filename.JPG) or raw files (or both)?
JPEGs are viewable by Windows Explorer, raw files are not.
Define your reference to not readable, with what?

If the target computer can't read what the source computer writes, unless you teach the target how to "read" that language, you need to write in a language that the target understands.

So, try saving the source as a pdf. At least the target will be able to read it so your friend will be able to enjoy your photos. But you can't edit a pdf like you can a RAW or JPEG.

Strange, on my WIN 10 computers Explorer opens my Canon RAW files, does the original computer open the files from the flash drive?

If I remember correctly, with Windows 8.1 I had to download an app to enable Windows Explorer to display Nikon RAW files (NEF) - thumbnails and views. After upgrading to Win 10 it just worked without downloading the special app.

I don't know what the problem is, but I never copy and paste from one drive to another. Using Windows 10, I open File Explorer and on the top of the page there are two options: Move and Copy; I use these two functions to either move or copy my photo files to another folder or external drive. I've never had a problem with another computer being able to open my files. But I only open my files in some sort of post processing software.

If you are using a photo processing program then copy/paste or drag and drop may not work as you may leave editing side car files behind. In that case you need to use the photo editing program to send the files in the appropriate format to the thumb drive so all edits will be included. Every program is a little different...

Did you format the drive first?

It sounds as though you may have copied "shortcuts" to the thumb drive.

Since you have a PC, right click on one of the files on the usb drive then select PROPERTIES. Look at the GENERAL tab, does "Type of file:" indicate JPG, or is it Shortcut? If it is shortcut you did not copy the actual file from your computer, but just a shortcut to it, which is why it will open on the orginal PC, but not on any others.
