Also remember, Sony employs software called Clear Image that is an improved digital zoom that allow you to zoom 2x on any lens ... with little to no image degradation.
GET OUT OF HERE!!! REALLY!!! My one complaint about the A6000 is its manual and the lack of in-depth information. I've never heard of "Clear Image." How do I access it? I love my A6000, but the menus are so darn hard to work through....

I agree with the other UHH poster on the Zeiss 16-70. That lens is a good choice that gives you a lot of flexibility. I have that lens on the camera a lot.
If you can afford that lens it's a much better lens to start out with.

I see a lot of discussions regarding long zoom lenses.

I don't particularly find them interesting, so you can say, then why the hell do you look.

I think about my history, having shot as an enthusiast over the years, starting in the early 60's

I'd easily say that in all that time, I've rarely shot a lens over 100mm. And, in conjunction with that, I've shot a LOT of prime lenses.

Guess I just don't get all the fuss about long zooms.

My favorite lens right now is a Fuji 18-55 f2.8-4 on the Fuji X mount. It's the kit lens for Fuji X and made with Wonderful Fujifilm EBC (Electronic Beam Coated) glass. Outshoots any other kit lens I've ever purchased, with the exception of a couple of Olympus lenses in that range at f2.8-4 also.

Clear Image Zoom - you have to be in JPEG - turn the zoom function on - and then - clear image zoom - it is buried in the menus.....

Thank you. Does it then zoom with a button or the rotary control?

There is a default button I believe - or you can assign a button ......I have A3000 and A77II so might be a little different.

Thank you. The lack of a good manual is very frustrating.

Gary Friedman's books on the Sony a6000 and a6300 gives you a complete look at these cameras. He explains every feature on them and once you are done reading his book just about every question you could think of has been covered.

Some good suggestions. I use the Zeiss 16-70 most of all and it produces very nice images. One caution I would make, is that if you ever consider moving up to any of the new Sony A-7 full frame cameras you will start all over again with lenses. The full frame FE lenses work great with the a6000. The best example for me was the Sony/Zeiss FE 55mm f1.8....very sharp.

I chose the Fujifilm 18-55mm f2.8-4 + a Fuji X-E2 camera for about half the price of the equivalent Sony-Zeiss mid-range zoom for my Sony a6000. I figured; why buy an unreliable Sony-Zeiss zoom when I could have an equivalent (or better) Fujifilm zoom (without the quality doubts of the Sony), plus the camera, for much less.

Le boecere , if you want to bash Sony how about some facts, not just unsupported opinion.

Don't gotta. A little research will reveal a significant number of reviewers who report qc issues with that particular lens (SEL1670Z). I did not want to do the buy-return-buy exercise to find a good one. (especially when one can find Fuji's version with a camera attached, and without the negative quality control reputation, for $400 less)

Regarding Sony-bashing: Hardly; I'll be using an a6000 to shoot a local event, this morning. And, my EDC is the RX100III.
