I would like to know if, when using a long telephoto lens, such as a 600mm should you use a support that attached to the base of the camera body and to the rail that attaches to the foot plate of the lens. I have been seeing them more and more. I was told this is a good idea, to take tension off the connection between the lens and camera body. If this is a good idea, could anyone recommend one. Thank to all in advance for your advice.

Regardless of the rig you choose, don't forget a cable release.

Now that I re-read your OP I guess this is the one you are thinking about -http://www.ebay.com/itm/Telephoto-Lens-Support-for-Arca-Kirk-Hejnar-RRS-Benro-Fluid-Video-Head-120mm/181899104428?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D2220071%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D39107%26meid%3D47cde71200f446729ed9ee7eb806b9ba%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D172143858639

And this is the one that does NOT allow turning vertical in the tripod collar - and nobody says that ......

I think it is a semi-good idea - especially if you never go vertical - or if you do go vertical, you have to somehow turn the whole assembly !
Now that I re-read your OP I guess this is the on... (show quote)

The long lens support bracket that I use from Really Right Stuff allows rotation of the lens within it's tripod support collar. The two mounting contact bushings used at front of the long lens support bracket unit actually rotate effortlessly.

Camera support is not necessary when your long lens is mounted on a tripod. I've been around several professional bird photographers and never seen that. I have shot thousands and thousands of frames with just the lens mounted. When on a tripod, I hold the camera body tight to my face and my left arm is draped over the length of the lens to dampen out vibrations.
