I don't know if this will answer your question but my Workflow (as far as b/u is concerned) is this:

1. After importing the images into Lightroom and renaming the files (Adding camera name -- I use four -- and date/time to file name), I immediately close LR and use "Compare Advanced" to sync the Lightroom Folder to three external locations.

2. After any post-processing session, I close LR (using the backup option) and again Sync the folder to update all of the Sidecar files... and JPEG/TIFF files if created.

Granted this is done manually (although I am sure a Macro could be made easily) but once you get in the habit (by remembering the pain of losing precious images) it is more or less automatic. (FWIW, if you decide that four copies of everything is overkill then some time could be saved... but not much.)

Will it work with Windows 10? I looked it up online, and it only mentions Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. Not exactly up-to-date!

I use SyncToy version 2.1(64) with W10 without problem. Most sw that works on W7 will also run on W10, especially 64 bit versions.

I am always leery of downloading something new without knowing it will mesh with my systems.

Sounds like a great program! I am currently doing... (show quote)

"Will it work with Windows 10?"

I am using it with Windows 10. It works fine.

Age and lack of on going support is one of the reasons I suggested above that that SyncBack be considered. Why SyncBack? One of my favorite online photography teachers is Tim Gray. He has repeatedly recommended it.

I use SynToy as well and love it, but I don't think it will run automatically. You must discipline yourself to run the backup. Am I correct?

You can run any application automatically at any time in Windows. Windows has it's own task scheduler called oddly enough, task scheduler. Go to control panel, Administrative tools, Task Scheduler. It's interface is typical windows mess, but it works well. I use Robocopy, which is also included in windows to do backups. It is really a technical mess because it's highly configurable, but it also works well. I run Robocopy from a batch file using the above task scheduler every day at 9:30 a.m. I never used syntoy but it would certainly run from the task scheduler as well.

Let's see if I understand - after importing and renaming, you close LR without the backup option, then sync to the external locations.
Then, after PP, you close LR with the backup loption, then synch.

Not too complicated, when using the "Compare Advanced" program. But this means that you have to re-open LR again to do your PP, then re-sync. Couldn't you import and do PP without the extra step?

Why this program? Never heard of Bauerapps until now!

I did notice that SyncToy is dated, and there is a disclaimer about tech support. But if SyncBack is good, how come you are not using it? Also, I only saw websites from which you can download it, but none from the original developer.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner. It automatically backs up any files I choose to any location I choose. You can tell it to back up only photo files to one location and then create another command to back up the rest of your files to another location. You can also ask it to schedule the backups for any time you like, and it will occur automatically was long as your computer is on. After the initial backup it works very quickly in the background and reports the success or failure of each back up.

I have been using "Second Copy" for years and am very pleased with it.
Google it to see the details. For $29 it is a great deal.

I use, and have been using SyncBack Free since it's introduction in 2003. Great software, runs in the background, and once you set it up, it runs and verifies your backups. The best part is the price -

I second this advice. We use it and love it. It is quite flexible.

I use SyncToy because it is a habit I started several years ago. It works. Everytime I check to make sure backup files are in place, they are. It is only a hunch and I don't know specifics.

I appear to have made a typing and brain mistake. I typed "SyncBack" when I was think of "GoodSync". It is GoodSync that Tim Gray recommends.

I can't give specifics because I've not used it. My hunch is that Microsoft is no longer very interested in SyncToy and I "should" make a change sometime soon. It will be to GoodSync and they do have a website: http://www.goodsync.com/
