I've come upon this site and am very excited. I do a lot of AF point and shoot digital photographs and want up my game in a big way! I do a lot of landscape and low light shots and have yet learn the nuances of lighting. I'm also researching the purchase of a new camera. I have $500-800 to spend and this will be my first DSLR. I've been a Canon guy all of my life but am willing to spread my wings for the best bang for my buck. I want to be able to add accessories as my knowledge grows while not having to change camera base.
Welcome to the forum. It's a great place.
(I too have been a Canon fan for YEARS, like over 40?. Currently using a T1i and a Sony H1.)

Welcome! I've been shooting Canon for a long time also and don't plan to change brands. This is a great place to pick up tips and knowledge and to learn more about photography and post processing. Good luck.

Welcome.
I am also a Canon user for several decades. For overall performance I have not found a better line than this. Nice thing is they have 100% compatability with the very first AF lens and the latest whiz bang camera. They set the gold standard that others are desparately trying to catch up with. Like electronic aperture control since 1987 and others are just now figuring out how to do.
Canon has some excellent cameras and lenses in your price range.
Being a Canon shooter also I would recommend the 70D. It has a higher learning curve than some of the other Canons but you do not have to learn it all at one time. I especially like the lay out of the controls and the focusing system. It is also weather resistant. I would suggest that if you do get it look for used one and get a good field guide to go with it. You will need it to get the best use with it. It will do you for a good five or more years.

Well, I myself was a Panasonic Lumix point & Shoot photographer, I finally upgraded, after much research, to my first DSLR, the Nikon D3300, with the DX 18-55 VRII and the DX 55-200 VRII Lens. Highly rated and recommended DSLR Camera. Not the Best, and also not the most expensive, but very good beginner's Camera.
Nikon D3300 used for $300.00 with one lens. New will be closer to $400.00.
Got mine with both lens, around 450.00
Welcome aboard. Good luck with your camera purchase.
