I am going to assume you are speaking about street photography. If that is the case my 18-200MM stays on my D7100 95% of the time.

I recently purchased a Nikon D500 with the new kit lens 16-80mm f2.8/4. Very light, bright in the viewfinder and fast auto focus. It's a little pricey by itself but in the kit it was about $500. Perhaps you could rent one to try it out.

Hi all!

I currently have the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR on my D7100 and not really pleased with the results I get with it.

What is your favorite everyday ro "walk around" lens?

Thanks,
Bob

In keeping being toward the end of the line, now I will post.

I have a 7100 and my walk around and only lens is a 18-300. I do everything with it except macro. But it does some really nice very close ups

To all who have offered advice and recommendations, thank you very much! All greatly appreciated.

After reading all the comments, I have decided to first have my 16-85 checked/calibrated/cleaned at a service center before moving on to a new lens.
If I do move on, I will be looking at something in the same zoom range as the 16-80 f2.8 or similar.

Again, thanks to all!

My only Nikon is an FM film body (full-frame, of course), and my favorite walk-around lens for it is an old Russian 50mm f/2 Helios lens, with the much older (1960s) 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor (Sonnar Type) my favorite Nikon lens ever, but less useful as a walk around.

I love the results I get from my 16-80. It's sharp and light, has VR, and takes excellent images.

I've become very fond of the DX 35 mm 1.8 on my 7100. Like many primes it is light and fast.

Good decision. My D200 and I travelled all over the world with that lens (Spain, Iceland, Indonesia, Japan, etc etc). I found it to be very sharp, compact, fast focusing. I was always happy with my shots. Then, of course I had to go full frame and invite a whole new set of compromises to deal with. Good luck with your cleaned and tuned lens.

My 18-140 does a brilliant job...wide enough for a good field of view and a bit of zoom for the other "stuff"...

Mine is a Nikkor 50mm f/2 from the 70's.

I also like a Nikkor 35mm f/2.

I only have two lenses, the 50mm f1.4 AI-s and 105mm f2.5 AI-s. The 105 is what I use about 98% of the time. Love it.

Thanks SX2002 for advice the 18-140 is one of the lenses I'm thinking about and the 18-200. You ever tried the 200?

Love my 18-200 VR ll, it is on my camera 90% of the time. First it was on my D7000, and now on my D7200. Clear and fast focus, lighter than the 18-300.
