Not answering the question.

Look at the 28-300

I have the same question as the OP. OTHER THAN an eventual move to a full-frame body, which I don’t see myself doing any time soon, what is the advantage of the 28-300 over the 18-300 “DX” lens? Is the “FX” lens better built? Sharper?

To walk around what, where? Indoors? Outdoors? There is no one lens fits all purposes.

You know darn well that “walk around” generally means outside, while “walking around”.

The lens I have on my camera 95% of the time is a Nikkor 28~300. Only it doesn't walk around. I have to carry it.

The build is typically better / stronger but not necessarily as the "DX" lens doesn't have to have the larger diameter of the "FX" lens. Personally, I would "try" to get "FX" lenses "just because". While I didn't plan to purchase an "FX" camera, I ended up doing to for business reasons. I was and am shooting a lot of real estate photos. If I am shooting wide angle shots of rooms, its nice not to have to account for that extra 1.5 "crop factor" enlargement on a lens. In other words, If I put an 18mm "FX" lens on my D610 (FX) camera, the field of view is that on an 18mm lens. If I put that same lens on my D7100 (DX) camera, the field of view is similar to a 27mm lens on the D610. That means that in order to get a similar photo on the D7100, I have to have room to back up some more. Sometimes, there just isn't the room. This holds true for ALL FX and DX lenses on a DX camera. Now, if you put a DX lens on an FX camera, the camera will either automatically shift to DX mode (1.5 times increase of apparent focal length) or you will have a photo with all but he DX portion of the sensor unexposed (again giving you the 1.5 times increase in the exposed portion. So, to eliminate the issue, I just buy FX lenses for both cameras. All of these lenses will fit all of the cameras I have so it isn't a big deal. However, be aware that FX lenses tend to be more expensive than the DX equivalent. And there are "KIT" lenses available for both that tend to not be as sturdily built.

That's an FX lens, by the way. The 18-300 is a DX lens.

Luv my 28-300 on my D7200.

On the same subject i need a "walk around"for my 3200 and soon to be 7200 that gives me more range than my 35mm and 18-55. I have been researching like crazy the 18-140,18-200,18-105. I have an old 75-300 I use with my tripod that I like for long range. From what I've read the 140 is the best. Any suggestions? Thanks you guys are the only ones I trust for good information

My wife has a wonderfully clear and sharp 55-300 on her D3200. Very nice images!

In my opinion is Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm. This gives you a wide to distance. I love it!

To me, a walk around lens is a lens that is my general "go to" lens for non-specific photography. In Florida, it would be walking the streets in one of the downtown areas, going into museums, visiting old forts, ships, etc. and general non-specific photography. In other words, when I leave the house with my camera, unless I am going to a specific place (nature preserve, bird sanctuary, Everglades, or other places that I am more likely to use a "long" lens rather than a shorter to wide-angle, it would be the lens that I would have on the camera. If I was going to somewhere that I knew that 90% of my shots would need to be long then, of course, I would have the long lens on the camera. Generally, in my case, I will have the 18-70 on the DX camera (yes it is a discontinued lens) and 70-300 (FX) lens on the D610. If I had to choose, then I would probably put the 50mm f/1.4 on the DX and just use my feet to zoom. When I go to the nature preserves, to Ft Desoto to watch the kite boarders, the Everglades, etc. then I put the 80-400 on the D7100, put the 70-300 on the wife's D70s, put the 50mm on the D610 and throw in the 18-70 and the 10-24 for insurance. Its easy enough to carry the extra lenses, a changing bag and a couple of circular polarizers in my vest along with cleaning solution and a couple of clean lint free cleaning rags.

I use an 28-140 VR Nikon lens ony 7100. Light in weight, really decent optics and a range that isn't too extreme.

I just replaced my 18 to 140 and my 55 to 300 with a 18 to 300. I think it's the ultimate walk around and Is very high-quality.
