Probably my biggest issue is that the 16-85 I have is not as sharp as I expect, especially comparing to other lenses I have.
I have tried the lens fine tune adjustment and didn't find much of an error or change with a small correction.
I will look at the old 17-55

Thanks!

Still not cheap, it's big, heavy- but it's stellar.
When you go beyond 3 or 4x zoom, you can see the compromises in most lenses.
Those suggesting a 28-XXX zoom....28mm (42mm FF equivalent) is not really in the W/A area with a DX camera.
Keep that in mind.

Some used ones here (around $600):

I think similar offerings from Sigma and Tamron get pretty good reviews, but I don't have any experience with them.

I can handle big and heavy if the results are worth it!
My 80-200 is also heavy, which I am sure you know, but it's results are worth it!

Does this 17-55 change length with zoom or focus? Or both internal?

Moves with both, I think. Mine is at home.

For some, that short a range may not work.
Depends on how you shoot.
Went to Europe a few years ago and used only an 18-55 on my Fuji. Never needed anything longer but I wound up stitching a few for wider angle. (Fuji's 18-55 is not your normal "kit" lens)

I generally use one of two lens for general purpose photography, an indoor and an outdoor lens. The 16-80 is great for indoor use and I use my 28-300 on my D7200 for outdoor use. The lens usually mounted on my D500 is my 200-500 and depending on location, I may use it with my 1.4 extender. There are times when the 28-300 ends up on the D500. It's all subjective to situation.

Get Nikon 18-200 + 35mm 1.8DX for low light and you are set.

The lens that's suited for the task at hand.

Good answer. It really depends on your mood and what you are looking to achieve. When I had a cropped camera, I used to "walk around" with any one of the following - 10-20mm F4-5.6, 18-200 F3.5-5.6, 17-50 F2.8, 24-70 F2.8, 80-200 F2.8, etc - basically whatever I was in the mood for. I gave up trying to get the best lens for all foreseen and unforeseen circumstances. I resigned myself to selecting a lens, any lens, and just look for opportunities for which the lens was particularly suited for. It really does help you see things in more interesting and creative ways.

I now use a full frame camera, and my go-to lenses seem to be my 45mm and 85mm PC-E lenses - and I shoot lots of scenic and landscapes, city scapes and some street. My favorite landscape lens is my 45 though. and when I need to get a wider field of view, I shoot a multi-shot pano, and stitch in post processing. I do own a 14-24, and a 24 PC-E, but I rarely use lenses that wide. They are somewhat special purpose and when you need them there is no substitute. But my landscapes have improved considerably since I started shooting with longer lenses.

. Shooting handheld at 300mm without producing noticeable camera blur is a real challenge.

Hi all!

I currently have the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR on my D7100 and not really pleased with the results I get with it.

What is your favorite everyday ro "walk around" lens?

Thanks,
Bob

I like the 28-300 Nikkor
