Hi all!

I currently have the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR on my D7100 and not really pleased with the results I get with it.

What is your favorite everyday ro "walk around" lens?

Thanks,
Bob

The lens that's suited for the task at hand.

Really dumb, meaningless response.

I would put a 35mm 1.8 DX lens on a 7100 and walk around.

Either 35mm or 50mm lens for me.

I think you need to answer the question; what kind of range you want from a lens? Weather it be fixed or zoom before you look for a new lens. I have a d7200 and really like the kit lens it came with the 18 to 140mm dx, but that's just me because I like the range from wide angle to a reasonable telephoto that I get. When I'm out doing macro work I have my 180 sigma lens on the camera.

Yet appropriate to the question!

For city walking around: a 35 or 50mm. For out in the country: 55-200 zoom.

I second Wayne's suggestion. I use the 18-140 on a D7100 and it is my favorite when I don't want to carry extra equipment and am not sure exactly what I will find to shoot. It gives you a nice zoom range and I get good results with it!

Look at the 28-300

Your question has a lot more implications then I first thought, hence the questions I must ask.

Are you ever planning to upgrade to a FX (full frame camera)
If you are planning to do so, then I would look at FX lens and use them on your 7100, then when you get the FX camera, you won't have to buy lens again.

What do you normally like to shoot?
Seanic - Wide angle
Street/portrait - 85mm
General walk around - 28-300
Wild life - 150-600

Will one single lens be adequate?

Ball back in your court!

I do not expect to upgrade to FX, but one never knows. I do have several Nikon FX lenses, 50mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8 macro and 80-200 f2.8 all non-vr; the 80-200 definitely gives me the most satisfying results.

The biggest part of my shooting fits best to the 16-85 or so range.

I am curious about other's experience with non-Nikon lenses, in the 16-85 or so range, as I have always stayed with Nikon.

I very much appreciate your opinion.

The 28-300 as general walk around lens only makes sense if carrying a tripod is part of your general walk around setup. Shooting handheld at 300mm without producing noticeable camera blur is a real challenge. 200mm is as far as I'll go without at least a monopod of sorts.

I think the 16-85 has been updated since your model.
Is it not as sharp or as fast as you want?
Nikon's 17-55 f/2.8 is old in the tooth (no VR), but very sharp.
Pro lens made when Nikon didn't have a full-frame camera.
2.8 maximum aperture through the whole range.
I still use mine.
There are some similar 3rd-party options that do have VR (IS, etc...whatever they call it)
Keep in mind, 28mm (the FX zoom offerings) is not wide at all on your DX camera, so unless you plan on going full-frame, it's something to remember.

Probably my biggest issue is that the 16-85 I have is not as sharp as I expect, especially comparing to other lenses I have.
I have tried the lens fine tune adjustment and didn't find much of an error or change with a small correction.
I will look at the old 17-55

Thanks!

That's my favorite walk around FX lens but for his D7100 I would go with the DX 18-200 for 1/3 the price. It gives the same angle of view on DX that the 28-300 does on FX.
