My new camera has a one year warranty. Seems kinda short for a complex hybrid of mechanical and computer gear, but that seems common. Has anyone bought a squaretrade extended warranty for their camera? Has anyone bought one from another provider?
Who thinks it's a waste of money?
Who thinks it's important?

I have bought the Square Trade warranty on all of my new cameras. I have ONLY used it once, but that was the first time I had purchased it. It was a Canon point and shoot (about $400). We had the camera for about 4 or 5 months and the wife accidently dropped a mug of hot coffee onto the camera (it was laying on an end table and she was watching TV instead of what she was doing and set the cup on top of the camera). The cup shattered as did the LED screen on the camera. Hot coffee went into the entire camera and it was unrecoverable (without major overhaul). I called Square Trade and gave them the info. They had be send in the damaged camera and they sent me a check for the full value of the camera. I immediately purchased a new one. I have gotten the warranty on each new camera (D7100, D610), and haven't used it since. But, the cost of the insurance (extended warranty) is small considering. The insurance/warranty covers all accidental damage that would NOT normally be covered under the 1 year manufacturers warranty and covers everything for the 2nd to the end of the purchased coverage after the manufacturer's warranty expires. Basically, like all insurance, they are betting that (ON AVERAGE) nothing will happen, and you are betting that it will. 99% of the time they are right, but if you need it, its nice to have.

If you paid for it by credit card, there's a good chance you already have the warranty extended by a year; check your credit card agreement.

I always decline when offered an extended warranty. I will ask the seller how much the extended warranty costs; when I get home I put that amount of money in a savings account. With some minor bookkeeping it is easy to see what part is "warranty money" and what part is "real savings."
I've been doing this for probably 15 or more years now. When my desktop crashed a few years ago, I had enough money there to buy a new one. And the same thing a few months ago for a new laptop.
I have, in effect, become my own insurer, and it seems to work very well.

Had very good luck with Square Trade. Never purchased for camera equipment, but have purchased Square Trade warranties for some other items and twice filed claims. They were very prompt in acknowledging my claim and even faster in paying and/or replacement. I would consider their warranty if cost is not too much. They do stand behind their guarantee.

I have used them several times in the past. They have repaired or replaced iPhones, iPads and MacBooks under the accidental damage coverage. All dealings have been excellent.

Yes, I've bought a Squaretrade extended warranty for a few items I have purchased, photo, computer, and other. I've also purchased other extended warranties. But so far the only item I have ever had to or been able to make a claim on is the stove (oven - range) that I purchased from Best Buy for my rental second home. I had to have it repaired twice for one tenant. Also the Dish Washer at that location had to be repaired and later replaced.

Oh, I forgot, I have had batteries in my automobiles that have died while still under warranty.

It is definitely a waste of money. The warranty companies stay in business by making a profit. Put aside the money they want and you'll be able to replace anything that breaks.

Most things fail either early in life due to defects or late due to wear out. The one year covers the early failures and cameras go obsolete before wear out.

Purchased a new 07 Toyota pick-up and extended warranty and one year later the rear axle was bad . They replaced it at no charge and gave me a new car to drive while repairs were being done. The invoice was 3500$ and taken care by the dealer.

My wife bought a 2014 Ford Fusion and paid $800 for an extended warranty against my advice...(you cant tell these women anything)...well, 5 months out of the warranty period the Sync display failed...the cost to replace it...$6600. Dealer paid for it all.

So that made me a believer...$39 to buy the extended spill and drop warranty on a D810 seemed like a no brainer to me.

As mentioned by Morning Star, most major credit card companies give you a year extended warranty if the item comes with at least a year warranty. This costs you nothing. Most electronic items will fail in the first few months if there is going to be a problem with the product.

If you live in Florida and have a claim on your homeowners, they usually cancel your coverage! I have found it best to have other policies and coverages on electronics, jewelry, etc.

The value is that the Square Trade Warranty covers owner stupidity (or wife's ) where the one year camera warranty only covers issues that occur from malfunction and not dropping or denting the camera through user error. This is EXTREMELY useful if you have children that may be using the camera/devices (with or without permission).

I have used square trade and macks. They fixed a camera I dropped and a scratched sensor without any fuss.

I've never purchased an extended warranty for anything - cameras, appliances, cars - and have never had problems which would have called for their use.

When I bought my first Subaru I got a 1/4 percent break on my loan by getting a five-year bumper-to-bumper extended warranty from a third party provider. I took advantage of it at every opportunity that seemed to present itself. I got back far more than what I paid for -- because I took advantage of it. A dealer explained to me that most people don't take advantage of the extended warranty unless it is a "big" item. The insurance companies depend upon people like that, so I got my money's worth and then some!

'It depends' For a camera, I often buy the warranty. I'm not worried that the camera will fail after the manufacturer's warranty--though it might. I buy it because my grand daughter might knock it off the table or I might drop it, or I might trip and smash it.

Squaretrade has a good reputation as compared to most of the others. Cameras and electronics bought at Costco have Squaretrade available at reduced cost. (Also Costco has realized how bad much of the tech support is. So Costco provides its own tech support on some products.)
