While in San Francisco recently I was at Pier 39. The fog off the bay was just starting to come in. By the time I walked over to The Golden Bridge it was getting a little heavier.

Linda, your image is a lovely setting that holds one's attention with the subtle balance of fog and light for a calming effect. The attached image is at a local waterfront marina. Usually, I will try to separate the foreground in a fog scene for a greater perspective. In this case I used a graduated filter in pp from the bottom up in combination with a bit of sharpening to reach that end.

Super capture Linda, love the composition and light.

Here's a real dreary one taken through the car windscreen on our recent trip to New England.

I would liken that to a little more than a 'light' fog, especially as its already burning of, but that's just my view. I think you've handled it well and portrayed the atmosphere more than satisfactorily. I can feel a chill in the air and a warm sun on my back. The only 'fault' I can see is that perhaps the shot could have been moved slightly to the right to fully include the stand of the 4 (birch) trees.

We don't get fog here very often, but one morning, towards the end of a stormy few days, we had fog. I grabbed my camera to take a photo of just anything with fog involved. This individual, dressed entirely in black, was walking slowly down the alley behind where I was staying, at the time.

My favorite scenes are when I'm on the edge of clearing fog and facing towards the sun. However, I have learned that if the sun is burning through rather brightly, it's best to keep it small in the frame. A large featureless white blob is not all that attractive

Here's a recent shot. View is across a river with sun on left, about an hour and a half after sunrise. Fog was thin and starting to clear, providing a translucent veil of light on the trees. In pp I used a high key filter, among other edits, to enhance the mood.

I have not taken any fog shots but am enjoying all of these. The only fog around here is in my brain and I can't figure out how to shoot it.

I have enjoyed looking at each photo in this thread. Fog is wonderful to shoot, so here is one thing I usually find out in the fog. Webs are usually saturated with water drops, and if the diffused background gives enough light, it's a great time to look for little things to shoot. These I took the one foggy day we had last month.

I think shooting fog is like shooting sunsets - You shoot many frames to get the right one.
These settings may not help you much but I shot these on a rainy day 112 mm - F 5/6 - 1/125 sec.

Glad you enjoyed the trees, Geoff, and thank you so much for posting this charming image! So much to enjoy in this image, and a lot left to our imaginations as to relationships and destination.

Can you talk about any exposure or pp challenges you might have had?

Here's on from me, Linda. It's pretty much sooc, if I remember correctly.

Here is a photo from last weekend of an old mill in rural NC that I had hoped would have some colorful leaves. I was too early for the leaves, but just in time for some early morning fog. The air temperature was crisp and the water temperature still warm. So, in the early daylight, the fog was present. As the sun rose, the fog disappeared... I am hoping to get back to the mill in a few days to see if the colors are better.

Linda, I like this image and the way you have processed it to achieve this light airy feeling. During my working years I used to take the occasional early morning fog picture, on film of course, on my way to work. But now that I am retired, I am never out early enough to catch the fog. I may have posted this image in my Grand Canyon series, but will offer it again here in the "spirit of fog". It was really a treat for me to capture some fog/cloud photos at GCNP, because I was expecting the usual clear sunny weather. This photo is one of several that I took as we were leaving the park. It was also lucky for me that on this morning the fog and clouds stayed around long enough for me to capture some nice images. This one was taken just after 11:00 am. Exposure info: 1/3200 sec, f.9.0, ISO 640, processed in Lightroom 5. No major modifications, just a slight increase in exposure, slight decrease in contrast, and an equally slight increase in saturation. I took nearly 50 photos on that morning, so it was not easy to pick just one to post. I have enjoyed seeing all the fog photos that you and others have been posting here.

I am so glad you posted the photo here, Tom. It's stunning, and I don't recall seeing many (from any source) of the Grand Canyon with fog. Really a show stopper!

Regarding your settings of 1/3200 sec, f.9.0, ISO 640. I'm wondering if you had the ISO set high for an earlier shot? Seems like shutter speed is super-fast, much more than needed.

You have brought back some great memories, Plymouth. I lived in the Bay Area from 1971 to 1981. Your shots are wonderful!

Was this a wet, misty fog where you needed to protect the camera and lens?

Your shot is so ethereal - a pleasure to just view.

I do like fog and even in our dry of Colorado we get fog. This image was taken on a road with fellow photographers on the way to shoot a sunflower field and we drove into this fog bank. We took turns standing in the road watching for cars so everyone could get a shot. We were driving right into the sunrise. Was fun!!

Handheld and little PP. This is exactly what it looked like.
