My favorite compositions are the arched bridge and the next to last shot, all that rock and water leading us to the building. Spot-on eye, as always Sylvia!

Thank you very much Linda your kind comments are always appreciated. Pleased you like the arched bridge, I wasn't sure how it would turn out the light was a problem!

An incredible set of images Sylvia, and your historical commentary makes them come alive. All are beautiful, but I am especially fond of #6, #7, and #8 because of the water and reflections. I think I just have a "thing" for photos like that.

While travelling along the N2 looking for a place to stop for lunch we hit a foggy patch and as we climbed over Whitcomb Summit a majestic bronze Elk memorial statue appeared facing the Mohawk Trail which was dedicated to the people who lost their lives in World War 1.
We drove on to the village of Shelburne. The Bridge of Flowers formerly a trolley bridge was built in 1908 for $20,000 by the Shelburne and Colrain Street Railway so freight and people could be brought up to the nearby mills in Colrain. As vehicle usage began to increase freight began to be transported more by trucks and the Street Railway company went bankrupt in 1927. The Shelburne Falls Fire District purchased the bridge for $1,250.
In 1929 with the bridge covered in weeds Antoinette Burnham came up with the idea of transforming the bridge into a garden. It was not needed as a footbridge and carried a water main between two towns so it could not be demolished. Eighty loads of loam and several loads of fertiliser were brought to the bridge. In 1983, $580,000 were raised for repairs to the bridge.
The Glacial Potholes which were ground out of granite during high water by whirlpool action of water and gyrating stones are on the Deerfield River at the base of Salmon Falls in Shelburne. There are over 50 whirling pools left by the glacial age varying in size from 6" to 39ft in diameter, they are one of the largest collections of natural potholes in the world and the site of the largest pothole on record. The were used for swimming but were closed to the public in 2002.

Your photos bring back many wonderful memories of the years I spent in Williamstown and North Adams. My late husband and I traveled the Mohawk Trail many, many times for visits in Shelburne Falls, Charlemont, Greenfield and all along Route 2. Is the old wooden lookout tower still standing at Whitcomb Summit?
