Nikon D5200 vs. D5500
I purchased the 5500 last June and I absolutely love it as a good, walk around camera. In various comparisons, it provides pretty much the same picture quality as the 7xxx series and lacks only a few 7xxx bells and whistles like the number of focusing points (since we both use only one, on P mode, it doesn't matter). On the other hand, the 5500 has that great touch screen and it's lighter and more compact. Considering the features Nikon added just in the past year, I'd go for the modest expense you mention and enjoy the 5500.
Fourlocks
All other differences aside on the 5200 - 5500.
The 5200 has low pass filtering (AA filter) Which smudges sharpness automatically
The 5500, as is happening with all Nikons, and many other mfrs camera's has the low pass filtering removed (No AA filter) which results in a sharper image and less need to sharpen in post processing.
That alone would be enough reason for me to switch.
Thanks everyone! I did get the newer f6.3 version of the 18-300mm. I now need to satisfy my GAS and waiting for Black Friday will be tough!
Worst thing is that your d5200 batteries don't fit the d5500

The batteries ftom my d5100 work fine in the 5500.
That was another reason why I chose the D5500, it uses the same battery as my D3300.
Sorry, my d5200 died and I was going to replace it with the d5500 but I was told by camera shop here that the d5200 battery grip and the batteries would not fit the d5500. Since I had a bunch of batteries and the grip, I replaced it with the d5300. Do not care about touch screen. I do like the articulated screen / display. It is my go to camera for tripod moon shots.

Good choice! The D5300 also has no low pass filter which will give you sharper images. That would have been my first choice before I got the D3300, but I was not unhappy with getting it to learn more about DSLRs before I got the D5500. Great idea about using the articulated screen for moon shots, I will have to try that.
When taking moon shots use the "live view " feature with the articulated screen. More comfortable, also use the remote release, only about $10 on amazon. I'm a newbie who just reads a lot
