This hawk has been hunting near where I live in Alameda California. I've seen it catch ground squirrels before, but never a rat.

Getting birds in flight is no easy task, and hawks are about the least cooperative bird I've ever seen, in spite of their size.
Excellent job on these.

Did you take these during the 'golden hour'? One professional photographer advocates only taking pictures during the 1 hour after sunrise and before sunset. The EXIF data seems to indicate you took these outside of that 1 hour time frame. Your pictures are excellent!

What does he photograph? I can't speak for others but with wildlife you take them when you can.

I love taking photos during 'golden hour' or 'blue hour.' And I often tell myself the same thing your 'professional photographer' advocates. But I don't think this applies as much to wildlife photos, especially birds in flight. You really need to have enough light to capture fast action without motion blur and to get fine detail and low noise. During golden hour you don't generally have it. Even in these shots i was pushing it by using ISO 320 and shooting at only 1/2000 sec f4 instead of shooting at a faster shutter speed as I prefer with BIF. A 300mm f2.8 lens would be better than my 300mm f4 in golden hour, which is why many wildlife shooters have one. The other point is that outstanding wildlife shots stand out largely because of compelling, even riveting, subject matter rather than photographic technique, which cannot necessarily be said of landscape or most travel photography.

I've been photographing this particular hawk on and off for some months and by now I don't think he/she likes me. Usually I can't get closer than 20 yards. Maybe this time he/she was really hungry and/or felt safe atop that pine tree. Once, before flying off, this hawk started screaming a typical hawk call and went on and on with it. As we all know, hawks have incredibly good vision and are aware of our presence even a great distance. While consuming the rat atop a light pole, the hawk let me get briefly within 30 feet before taking the remains of the rat and flying to a high perch in another tree. Here's what I got:
