My wife has a Sony NEX-5 and gets very good results from it.
I have an Olympus EMP-1, for about 6 weeks now.
I have always had a camera with a view finder, so it is taking me
some time to get use using the LCD to frame my shots.
I also have a Sony A SLT 35, which has a fixed mirror and a "C"
size sensor. My Oly MFT (micro four thirds) which has a sensor
a little smaller than "C" size does produce good photos when
operated properly. The Oly has a base ISO of 200, still good..
What do you think of these Photos, OK to C&C..

Funny, but I almost posted a similar question. I was wondering what this group thought about the future of the mirrorless camera and the DSLR. The mirrorless are not cheap, and they do not have a neat abbreviation (like DSLR). The reviews I have read say they produce nice images, but are not in the same league as the DSLR.

Of course, there will be progress. Will their smaller sensors be able to turn out images as good as the DSLR? Time will tell.[/quote wrote:

Jerry,

Whaddaya mean they don't have "neat" abbreviations like DSLRs? There's two that I know of:

1. CPC for Compact System Cameras

2. EVIL for Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens

I DEFINITELY like EVIL better, but then I'm just that kind of guy.

PD

How about a clue as to what "MILC" is?

I recently bought the Panasonic Lumix DMC G3 after much research. I'm basically a Canon person, but wanted to carry less weight and have all the controls I have on my Canon 40D. This camera comes close....a real joy to carry. Check it out!

Thanks for posting this. I'm also a Canon gal and have been eyeing the Lumix G3. But how's the IQ? I love tack-sharp pics and especially macro/close up and wouldn't want to sacrifice clear pics for size/weight. What's your experience, if you'd care to share it?

Right now I am traveling using on an mod-em5 with a variety of lens.

At this point I am fairly happy with the results including low light situations.

There are a few issues with sharpness but this may be the results of op error as several of the lens are capable of outstanding results.

I am not ready to sell off my d700/lens but I can see the advantage when traveling.

When I get home and print some images outi will have a better idea

Viewing a subject on a live view screen is more akin to how the photographic process 'sees it' than looking with one eye thru a little peep hole. True for digital or film.
How do you view a photo on a monitor? A print on the wall?

Edward Weston is nodding his head when he reads what I said because his 8x10 was mounted on a 20 lb. wooden tripod.

Brilliant! You made my day! Wondered if anyone would call me on the Weston thing. Yea, in his later years he didn't shoot any new photos cause he couldn't handle his equipment, even though he had moved 'down' to a 4x5 camera.
That's why my monopod always comes with me and my camera. Probably even if I get into the compact camera thing. Hell, my hands even shake sometimes all on their own.

Guess that's why Brett used a 4x5.

In truth mirror-less technology in cameras have been around for a long time. In the film days we called it transparent mirror technology and back in 1967 I had a Pentax transparent mirror camera.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pellicle_mirror
Today’s technology makes the revival of the concept better than the previous film cameras with transparent mirrors.

Bruce,

Wouldn't it be neat if somebody came out with a semi-transparent shutter? Then there'd be no moving parts except for the control dials & the shutter button itself.

SIGH!

Yes it would be great, maybe in the future the will be able to make an intelligent sensor chip that could also act like a shutter by turning it on and off.

Here's one more vote for mirrorless micro four thirds cameras. My Panasonic Lumix G10 Micro Four Thirds (with both a view finder and LCD screen) stands up nicely the big boys. It goes with me everywhere, takes pretty amazing pictures and has turned me into a photo fanatic. There are not a ka-zillion lenses to choose from like Canon and Nikon, but the Leica and Panasonic lenses I have for it (Leica 45 mm macro, Panasonic 14-140 walk-around and Panasonic 100-300 telephoto) are keepers with new releases tempting me every couple of months. I'm with mirror-less micro-four thirds for the long haul!
