In three weeks I will be on the west coast of Florida for a few days. We have set aside 1 day for the Everglades . I know it is not much time but does anyone have suggestions on the best places to go or the must do events? Any driving loops etc. looking for any photo ops , maybe an airboat ride. Just trying to make the most out of a short period of time.

I've read some of the other replies and they all give you good information. However there is one crucial bit of information I haven't seen anyone mention BEWARE OF MOSQUITOS! I got out of my car at the Everglades sign for your typical tourist 'Been there!' type shot and when I got back in I had about fifteen bites. I was only out of the vehicle for about two to three minutes. They're quick and voracious so slather the repellant on!

I recommend starting at the nature center at Corkscrew Swamp.. Well maintained walkways through the swamp.. Good, close-up photo opportunities of flora and fauna..

I am not that far from the Everglades National Park. Shark Valley on Highway 41 West takes you there from Miami in about 30 minutes. Warning: we have had a very active rainy season and usually when that happens birds tend to concentrate somewhere else where the water levels are low and it is easier for them to feed. Anyway, I would say it is still too early to photograph birds in Shark Valley.
The Loop Road as has been mentioned here is another good place for wildlife. Early in the morning it is possible to see deer and the many cypress in the area makes for some very beautiful shots.
I am not familiar with Ding Darlin Wildlife Refuge but it is well known for the concentration of birds. To the South, at Florida City there is a road that will take you to the Everglades if you decide to venture that far. Plenty of opportunities on that side of the Everglades when the birds are at peak season. Down the road and at the tip of Florida is Flamingo, part of an area with campground facilities and lots of mosquitoes this time of year. It is a favorite for fishermen and in good days you can see caimans roaming around the marina.
As I said, it is not the season yet to photograph birds but you never know.

I think you should PM gregoryd45 who lives in 'Everglades City and photographs the area every day. I have been there five times and always come away with all the photos I can use. Greg is a Hogger and would be glad to talk to you and help you out. We go on Loop Road every time and have never been disappointed. The birds have not come back for the winter as yet but in three weeks they should be starting. I know you will have all the fun you want. Post some pictures when you get back and make us old timers envious. I am going again in Jan. or Feb. just before the winter rates go up for the snowbirds.

This is the absolute best advice that you will get. If there is wildlife - Greg knows where it is. And he is the nicest guy you will ever meet. PM him. I was just there with him and Ol' Frank and his lovely wife. I too, will be returning.

I agree with Frank! I just met with Gregory two days ago and he is the best bird photographer in the everglades. There is not much going on right now and I don't know how much that will change in just three weeks. The loop road off US41 is gravel and about 40 miles long with lots to photograph, but I would check with Greg first as the Everglades cover an immense area.

Lots of good tips and advice on here so far.
I personally love an airboat ride but others are right, animals mostly make themselves scarce around airboats.
My personal tip? Whatever form of transportation, NEVER dangle your hand (or any other body part) in the water!

I could not agree more. I was in Shark Valley a few years ago and elected to walk rather than take the tour and I got excellent images of numerous bird species and alligators.
