NJphotodoc Loc: Now in the First State

As a NY'er (OK I confess I did move to Northern NJ a while back), I have to admit that the number of reputable camera stores is quite limited. You can certainly see any number of " camera stores" around the typical tourist areas, but they are just rip-offs that don't know the first thing about cameras. Even some of the old names like 47th St Photo are now just grey-market resellers and not worth even going to their website to browse.
I also went to Willoughby's Camera in NY to browse around the store but while at one time this was one of the best places to shop is now but a shadow of its' former self.
Where I live ( 4 miles from NY in NJ) where there was once nearly a dozen camera stores in a 10 mile radius, there is only 1 left - Bergen County Camera in Westwood and also Unique Photo in Fairfield (about 30 miles from NYC). I would avoid, however places like Abe's of Maine that again only look to sell grey market and then bundle with high-priced but low quality add-ons.
On the other side of the Hudson, outside of the ABC trio (Adorama, B&H and Cameta), there is also Berger Brother Camera with stores on Long Island, along with Westbury Camera and Koh's Camera in Bellmore.
All of these stores provide internet sales and if you are outside of NY (or NJ), sales tax to other states goes away. Before I wrote this up, I checked and for a D7200 body , they all are asking the same price since Nikon imposes this. However I do know that when lens and camera manufacturers do their road shows, they tend to go to the bigger local stores where you can meet and speak with company experts. For example, I go the annual show at Unique Photo where I can get my camera and lenses cleaned by the manufacturers and get a coupon for a $10 rebate on whatever I buy at the show (not brand specific, but anything).

I've been to Service Photo in Baltimore. They're very good. Lots of Nikon gear.

Ray Supply in Glens Falls, NY gets my business as they are willing to try to match prices from downstate in the Big Apple. The best is they are local and always there when needed. Good people to work with you.

While I have never visited them, they are on my list of close by shops (less than 60 miles) to go along with The Photo Lab which I mentioned earlier.

Ray Supply just moved from the Route 9 Queensbury store to a side street Glens Falls. I hope this move does not hurt then. They are no longer have that high visibility location. They do have a web presence.

After shopping online for years (BH, Adorama, etc) I discovered one of the last real camera stores in the Maryland-PA-Virginia area, Service Photo in Baltimore. Now I give them the majority of my business. To begin with, the prices on my favorite brands - Nikon and Fuji - are all pretty much controlled by the manufacturers, so the only "premium" I pay is state sales tax. But I've decided it's worth it for all the personal service I get. I can touch and feel everything before I buy it, and the sales staff are all photographers who actually use the gear that they sell. The owner is often seen on the sales floor, especially during special events, and he keeps in touch with his customer base with timely e-mails. For example, right after the Fuji XT-2 was announced, I got an e-mail asking if I wanted to be on the pre-order list. When the first shipment arrived I was away. But when I returned the next month I sent him and e-mail, and he set aside a unit until I got there in a couple of days. One of his salesman is a real Fuji nut, so I enjoy talking with him and getting advice. I'm also a Nikon shooter, and the store often has Nikon reps available for tech help and sensor cleaning. Take a look at the attached Sales Flyer for this weekend. Reps from Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji will be there along with special offers. I'll be there to pick up a new Fuji lens and to have my D750's sensor cleaned. And I'll be in the company of fellow photographers, all enjoying the excitement of a great sale and lots of great tech talk. You can't get that online.

If you live in Annapolis you might also check out Ace Photo in Ashburn, VA (near Dulles Airport). They have a huge inventory.

My favorite is Samy's Camera with multiple stores. Their flagship store on Fairfax Avenue, just north of Whilshire, is like a candy store with anything that you want and desire. It has 3 or 4 stories of goodies and does a huge rental business on the first floor. In the Los Angeles area, there are other very good camera stores but Samy's has always been my favorite.

Small; offer classes; web site: http://www.powellcamera.com/Powells/PCS_Home.html

I've only been there a few times. I is conveniently near the Adult Tri-Community School of Photography. Though for most major purchases and rentals those students go to Sammy's in Pasadena.

Unfortunately the stores where I bought a lot of my supplies and gear in the past are now out of business. These include Frank's Highland Park Camera (Los Angeles, CA), Lee Mac Camera (Pasadena, CA), and Claremont Camera (Claremont, CA). Temple City Camera is long gone as well.

Did you do business with the Late Bel Air Camera in the Westwood Village S/O the UCLA Campus before it Shuttered its Doors right after New Years this Year in January

For me these days it's B&H, Ebay, Amazon, and Freestyle. What is still open is International Camera Repair in Pasadena, CA. But that is an even rarer repair facility.

I'll add another vote for Samy's Camera. The Fairfax store is indeed a Wonderland, full of everything photographic and knowledgeable people. The Pasadena store isn’t as big, but it’s also full of good people and equipment.

Someone else mentioned Woodland Hills Camera. They aren’t as big as Samy’s, but they were the only retailer brick & mortar or online who had a Nikon D500 in stock when I bought it in June. Their full name is Woodland Hills Camera & Telescopes. While I still don’t have a telescope, I did buy Celestron SkyMaster Pro binoculars from them last year.

I'm initiating this thread with the hopes of accumulating a list of outstanding camera stores throughout the country. We are all aware of the great camera stores in New York, but there are still those hangers-on throughout the country that will let you test lenses right out of the box as well as rent lenses. In the Dallas area it's Arlington Camera in Arlington, TX....almost under the shadows of Jerry Jones Stadium and the Ranger Ballfield as well. I'll post the link to their website. If you have a camera store you'd like to post, please do so. Perhaps when they've all been posted a new thread could be compiled with a state by state listing.

In the Saint Louis area, it is Creve Coeur Camera and Shiller Camera. Both are great stores, but Shiller's caters more to the Pro Level and Industry photographers. And don't forget UHH's MTShooter, I bought my Nest Gimbal from him; great guy and always helpful on this site.

YES!

The Saint Louis area here === We are "blessed" with two camera stores to choose from. I do prefer Schiller's Camera over Creve Coeur Camera as I really like the knowledgeable staff there. Over the years I have bought many good items at Schiller's - Now that I have a lot of time on my hands, and that they are close to where I live, other than the "other store" - I get to Schiller's just about on a weekly basis. If for no other reason to be in the company of my own kind :-). The also have a stock of supplies for Chemical Photography as well... I love the smell of "fixer" in the morning... ;-)

I think that Schiller's will do mail orders as well.

Please = Check them out:

The Space Coast’s Southern Camera recently closed, but they were fairly small. Nearest pro-level dealer, I believe, would be Colonial Photo and Hobby in Orlando (634 North Mills). They seem to be fairly well-stocked. They had 2 Nikon D5 XQD’s on the shelf towards the end of Nikon's $500 additional trade-in allowance promotion. They no longer sell printers, however, so they might not meet every need, but probably most. They have a fairly large, free, off-street parking lot.
