I didn't know you could buy a new body. I'll have to get one. The one I have now is fat, worn out and falling apart.

I hear you! I have a few aches and pains I would like to get rid of. I wonder if they have a Giada DeLaurentis model available? I'd like to try that one out for a few weeks!

I was wondering if anyone buys extra insurance when buying a new camera or lens. My new credit card will "double" the manufacturer's insurance, but in the past I have always purchased extended warrenties, and happily have never needed them. I am thinking about upgrading my Canon equipment, and was curious as to what others do.

I don't but then I tend to treat my gear like a new borne.

I usually buy only for major appliances and computers (when my kids were small). On major appliances I've used the extended warranty 4 times. One was for a water heater which burned out with 3 days to go on the warranty. For my computers I've saved lots for with the kids they have spilled water and soda into numerous keyboards. The worst was one where my 2 year old climbed up a book shelf and pulled down a laptop and then fell onto it damaging the screen. Thankfully he wasn't hurt and HP replaced the screen.

I have bought the insurance on my cameras and lens and it has paid off twice now with much more value than what I paid. I guess the value of the item helps to decide if it's worth it.

I sometimes do for equipment i'm going to put in harm's way. (Like loaning to my adult daughter)

I insure all my photo gear - cameras, lenses, tripods, electronic flash, etc. with the same company that handles my auto insurance - State Farm. Everything I own in the photo line has passed its warranty date. Cost is only about $100 to $125 per year. I feel safe at that price.

I always buy the extended warranties.

Hasn’t helped me with photo gear, yet, as I haven’t had a problem. But it’s saved my butt a few times with computers. Power supply on an older computer and replacing the screen on my MacBook Pro last year.

Bought a Panasonic Lumix super zoom point & shoot for around $500. Paid for Best Buy Insurance 2 yrs @ $75 total. Took it to grandson's boy scout camp, left it on a camp chair covered by hat outside of our tent and went to dinner. (Stupid I know.) Downpour came, covered the camera in a pool of water in camp chair seat, shorted everything but rescued sd card. Best Buy replaced camera with new model @ 24x with no charge . Covered new camera with same policy, but 6 mos later left it in console of rental car. Best Buy said it wasn't theft and wouldn't reimburse me for being negligent. So I felt pretty good about my 50% recovery. Haven't replaced it yet. Still gunshy of small point & shoot high value cameras. Here's an aside: Best Buy allows you to return electronics including high cost computers for full refund including software and warranty within 14 days of purchase. I bought MacAir laptop to see if I could tolerate the change from pc to mac. I found too many two-key shortcuts needed memorizing and no touch screen on apple computers. Go figure. I just presumed it would, what with my touch screen iPhone and wife's iPad. Returned it for full refund including apple warranty and virus software. Bought 2in1 Dell w/touch screen, 12 gig RAM 512 gig SSD and geek squad 2 yr warranty and service contract. I think its a good way to try out new technology with limited risk.

The last two Canon cameras we purchased from Best Buy, we bought the 3 year warranty. The first one stopped taking clear pictures about 6 months from the end of the warranty. We sent it back 3 times and then they said to pick out a new one. So we got a two year newer camera free more or less. The second camera the SX60 would not take clear pictures, especially with the longer zoom. I never was satisfied with it. It had other issues too. After sending it back 3 times and about a month from the end of warranty, they scrapped it, gave us full original price to put on a new camera. This time we went to a Nikon D5500 with an additional long lens and took out warranty on both. The warranty has paid off for us. I think we may be hard on cameras...... If this one doesn't last they may ban us from their store...lol

Yeah, I do when it comes to cameras. Home owner's even with a rider, are terrible to deal with. Been that route. Normally, I would say they are a waste of money since I used to deal with them in the tv business. However, when it came to my last Sony camera (which was not cheap). it paid off in spades. I paid $179.00 for a 4 year, anything goes contract.. I fell down the stairs one night and there went the camera and lens. The lens was not covered, but they repaired it anyway free of charge. Then, I had a couple of things go bad simply due to wear & tear and I had no problems getting quick, excellent service.

And now I have a new, very expensive camera with a $12,00.00 lens (I might be exaggerating a bit about the lens, but not by much). You bet I have an add on warranty. Be warned though, you need to be savvy when shopping these warranties. Do your homework.

I'm curious how a credit card "doubles" the manufacturers policy if the manufacturer doesn't offer that. Obviously through a 3rd party.
When offered 3rd party insurances I had a choice of three different companies through the seller.
All called it basically "drops and spills+/-" and where covering about the same.
Since I shoot in the rain as needed for the sports I shoot, I called the insurance companies and was told by two of them that they absolutely would NOT cover rain. The 3rd one said yes, so purchased that one.
If you have a specific need, ask, or get something that covers what you need possibly from your insurance co. Just saying.

Take a look at some of the credit card offers and conditions and perhaps that will enlighten you on the extended warranty benefit. It's a great feature.
