Don't just look at camera bodies - look at all the other goodies like lenses, strobes, etc. You don't want to spend a few thousand dollars and change your mind after purchasing lenses or strobes that will only work on the brand you are not that happy with. If you're new, do you have a mentor? What do they shoot or recommend? Do you have friends that are in the camera hobby? It'a a major investment and takes serious consideration.

I have had athe 60D for about a year and am very happy with it. I stayed with Canon because of my collection of lenses. I agee with the previous comments about spending more money on good lenses and sticking with the same brand cameras. Eventually I will move up to a full frame and will already have the lenses to go with it.

I am new to these two cameras- which camera would you all exerienced photgraphers suggest - as a long term investment- or do I look at Sony?
thanks

I am waiting for the Canon 60D to be discontinued, because at that point its price will plummet, yet it remains a good second camera. It has good low light capability and the very desirable articulated LCD screen.

The Canon equivalent to the D7000 is the 7D not the 60D. The 60D is more consumer oriented while the 7D is more professional oriented. The 60D is almost a step down from the 50D. I have both a 50D and a 7D and really like them both (I recently traded my 40D in on the 7D).

That being said, I have a shooting buddy who has the D7000 and it is really a great camera too.
