JSandK, you are going to love that trip! My better half and I have RVed it twice and are planning our third trip for next summer for our 50th anniversary.

I think you have the lenses you need as well as the other items you mentioned. The only addition I would suggest is the steadiest tripod you can get as well as an AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III. The reason for this suggestion is that of the thousands of photos I took with the zoom all the way out, there seemed to be no way I could hold it steady enough! And, I never seemed to have enough reach with the 300mm.

One of the best events of our last trip was a whale watching/Glacier Tour out of Valdez on board the Lulu Belle, I highly recommend that one. They do not stay on a strict schedule but will go where necessary for you to see and photograph whales amongst other sea critters.

Have a great time and we would love to hear about your trip in detail with pictures. (P.S. keep at or below 50mph when the roads get rough and you will be able to see the frost heaves in time to take appropriate action.)

Heard about those frost heaves. They say by the later summer you can see the black tire marks for many yards after the heave from vehicles landing after having been airborne. I will for sure check out the teleconverter. Thanks.

Hope you are going to carry extra tires. Dave

Looking into retrofitting huge reusable airbags that will auto inflate upon reentry landing. 33 feet RV and towed vehicle will definitely require really thick material and heavy duty stitching.

I'd add a tripod and the Nikon type remote release.

The latter is exceedingly valuable on the D5100 which has input ports front and rear and a fully articulated screen. You can use it with the tripod to compose and take pictures of yourself. You can use it as a remote release when using the tripod on wildlife. You can buy knock offs for as little as $4 on Amazon but I went for the actual Nikon one at $15.

The main accessory I enjoyed on my cruise to Alaska last month was a Sigma 150-500. Alas, it cost the same as the camera kit.

Hi all,

I am a Noobie to DSLRs. Just purchased a Nikon D5100 kit with 18-55 and 55-300 lenses. We are RVing to Alaska for 4 months this summer, and I purchased the camera for the trip, for taking scenic view pics, wildlife, and documenting lots of fly fishing. I am curious what you all would advise I take on the trip, and any other advice. I do have extra batteries, flash cards, SB400 flash unit, AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1:2.8G lens, and Ortlieb waterproof camera bag.

I see some of you here are into fly fishing, so any particular ideas there? We are doing an 8 day wilderness float trip down the Goodnews River over on the Bering Sea side of Western Alaska. This retirement thing is everything it is cracked up to be.

Very nice shot of the whale tail. I wish I had more zoom than the 300, but alas, some limits to the camera cache. I do have the tripod (Manfrotto portable) and Nikon remote.

Seems to me you are good to go!

The Nikon 55-300mm is a fabulous lens. You'll do fine with it.

BTW, you might try using it with VR ON with the tripod. I found a Nikon write up that said it is "tripod aware" and adjusts the algorithm to make the VR work with a tripod. I never tested it systematically to assure that was true and my Sigma is quite clear about turning off OS when using a tripod.

Never heard of that, about the VR. Interesting. I am so new to it all, it seems it would be a bit strange to turn it off. What might it do that could be a problem if left on?

In older and other VR/IS/OS systems it can cause movement when there is none thus blurring your shots instead of clarifying them. The system is designed to sense movement and adjust the lens or sensor (not sure which in the 5100 but I think the lens) to correct for it. As with all such electronic systems it can respond to electronic noise as if it were actual movement. I also have read that it can interpret the small movement from the mirror and shutter as camera movement and adjust where none is needed.

Have fun. Enjoy. Just remember, if you're in the neighborhood of a grizzly bear, try not to look like a fish... :)

Ahh, thank you for that info on VR. Learning curve on this stuff is massive - but I WILL get it, mostly, in time, with patience, and the help of you folks. Thanks again.

Photog1,

Yes, we were forewarned by the guide we will be using on our 8 day float down the Goodnews River over on the Bering Sea coast - that Grizzlies have right away, which means you get outta the way right away. Cut your line if you have a fish on and call it an offering to the fishing gods.
