When I first got my Mac I used YouTube to learn how to navigate and use my new computer and software. Just type in Using LR with Mac and then chose from the tutorials

VERY FRUSTRATING!! My question is; I am finding that quit a few LR menus are not the same, even as they say they should be in the manual. LR does not work the same as did on Windows 7. (I am about to go back to windows and throw out this apple).

Tim - I will buy your freaking Apple computer (sight unseen), but you pay for shipping and insurance. No sense you remaining frustrated.

Ray, let's agree not to get into a bidding war over this.

Tim, I will pay shipping and insurance. What kind of machine do you have?

I feel that way every time I turn mine on. I wish I had never changed. Nearly all my photos are on external hard drives. Because they were first used on a PC, the Mac will not allow me to use those hard drives. Pages is a poor program and messes up every document. Can't Apple make anything that will work with the rest of the world?

Am I do something wrong, or do I have a problem?

I have tried for a year and a half. How much time do you think it takes?

Give the Mac a bit more time. Once you get used to it, you'll never give Windows a second glance. If you're brave, learn a bit of Unix and tcsh to operate from the command line - now that's real power for you! I would have thought that LR would appear the same on Windows and Macs (never used LR on Windows so no personal experience there).

There are a lot of Mac people on this list who can help out with all things MacOS related. And if you're near an Apple Store take a few "intro to the Mac" classes. They will help get you up to speed very quickly.

I found that the secret to converting to, and subsequently loving the Mac was to stop thinking 'how do I do what I did on Windows on a Mac' and start thinking 'what's the most logical way to do this'!

Think of shutting down the computer - on the Mac, you click on shutdown or restart. On the PC you click 'start'! (Or at least you used to.

You shouldn't be shutting down your Mac. It's not a PC. Just leave it turned on it will sleep when you are not using it. You don't have to go through that booting all the time in fact it's better not to.

I leave mine on all the time. It goes weeks without being shut off. No problems.

Actually me too. The iMac virtually never gets turned off. I think they prefer that!

What is not to prefer? The instant response? Not having to wait?

No need to throw out the Mac. Just download Windows 10 onto it. My son said the MacPro was the best computer, so I bought it, but I also loaded Windows 10 onto it. Works great. I have forgotten how I did it, but Windows 10 is piggybacked onto the Mac OS system. Once Windows is loaded, you are given an option of which OS to open. Afterwards, while booting up, you can hit certain keys and bring the option back up and move over to the Mac OS. For instance, if you want to use Facetime to do a video chat with somebody that has an Apple cell phone, you can do so.

Ok lets address your issues lets start with your external hard drives. Chances are they are formatted with the Windows NTFS file system this belongs to Microsoft and OSX by default mounts these drives read only. OSX can mount natively Read/Write but it requires some command line configuration and is for individual drives. So the easy way is to get Paragons NTFS driver for OSX https://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ install that and you are good to go if you are running Yosemite you can get version 12 for free. Once installed there are no more issues. Alternatively you can reformat the drives using Disk Utility, obviously that will mean moving data from the drive first or losing it. The ntfs driver is the simplest option.

pages is a Mac program designed to produce documents on the Mac an interesting feature is that it stores revisions within the file. Sometimes that is quite useful I used it for invoices. 1 file instead of a bunch... Anyway you probably want to open Microsoft DocX documents. So there are a couple of options buy microsoft office or perhaps use the online version. Also Google Docs can be quite good. Another alternative is Libre Office a fully featured office suite with pretty good compatibility with Office Doc formats.

You may never have had the fun of working with microsoft office and microsoft works totally incompatible with each other and made by the same company! so if they can't make their own software work together it is pretty good going for third parties to reverse engineer their formats.

I left windows for apple 8 years ago. The hardware is amazing, the software very " soft" , 10 years behind Microsoft. I've made a list of weaknesses and list is long. Steve Jobs was a stubborn man. Here is one example: why do we have to click " send anyways" 100 times a day when we send emails without a " subject". Microsoft offers a window that reads " never ask this again" and after clicking it you don't get this annoying question again. My mac doesn't even spell correctly. The list goes on and on. But I have adapted and besides I have no choice, the apple hardware is expensive and they do certain things well. Hang in there and be patient, the worse is yet to come.......

DDS82,

Do you really send 100 emails a day without a subject? Glad I'm not on your mail list...majority of those in my box go directly into "junk".

To OP,

Hang in there. Once you get over the newness you won't look back. If there is any doubt in your mind which way the market moves just visit any large book store. There are numerous books on transitioning from Windows to the MAC but few or none going the other way!

By the way, Pages is a good program, just different from Word. The great thing is Pages will read a word document and can output in a number of formats including Word.

I've never heard of anyone going back to Windows after trying Mac - voluntarily. Except my 80 year old Father in Law, who went from a 15 inch PC screen to a 27 inch iMac and found he was not able to control his mouse/cursor. - he was pushing his mouse off the desk! - he also still uses AOL for everything!
