I have taken broken things apart as well and usually I can put things back together -- A Zoom Lens however is something that has "Clocked" parts - rings and things that Must go back together in a vast array of order.... If it is a simple zoom lens this is good and if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have small screwdrivers and lens wrench set Go for It.
I recently bought a Sony A-6000 from someone on e-bay for 250.... It did not work as the lens was faulty -- I took the lens apart and was looking about the inside of the mounting of the lens - I did not see anything wrong - So I put it all back together. In so doing there was a little "Flat Flexible ribbon Ribbon Cable" that I reattached and put it all back together. I mounted the lens to the camera ... And to my surprise.... It Worked and has worked for over three months now.
The was an electrical problem - Yours Is Mechanical... Good Luck.

take it apart and see what makes it tick, maybe you'll see why its not working. If not while its apart, hang the parts on thread and make it look like it exploded and take a few pics of it

Find out the repair cost and compare that to what the lens is now currently selling for. If the difference is in your favor; fix it and sell it.

I own a Leica 3f and my lens would not turn, so I put a drop of very fine oil on the area that turns... that did the job. It now turns.

And don't forget the ethyl spirits for yourself. The job might not be exactly what you expect.
